PRINCIPAL’s MESSAGE
I hope this newsletter finds everyone rested and refreshed after the summer break. I also hope that this was a
good summer, filled with some combination of relaxation, travel, vacation and further study. I hope that most, if
not all, students are getting excited about a new year of learning, and all the opportunities and challenges that this
brings. We are very much looking forward to the beginning of another school year.
Prior to writing further, in late June we learned that one more big staffing change was happening at Fraser
Heights. Mr. Brian Tait, one of our Vice Principals, was transferred to Guildford Park Secondary. Mr. Tait
worked for two and one half years at Fraser Heights and brought an incredible work ethic and a quiet, yet student
centered approach to everything he did. Mr. Tait built strong positive relationships with staff and students alike.
We will miss him, but wish him all the best at Guildford Park Secondary. Mr. Travis Mackenzie will replace Mr.
Tait. Mr. Mackenzie was most recently the Athletic Director and Leadership, Social Justice and Social Studies
teacher at Ecole Kwantlen Park. We look forward to working with Mr. Mackenzie.
For students, as with every year, there are key core components to getting off to a good start and making sure that
you are successful this upcoming school year. The first is to realize that success in school, like success in life,
requires organization, hard work, commitment and persistence. There are no easy paths. Instead to maximize
your potential and your success, you need to focus during instruction, use your class and flex time effectively and
you should do thirty to sixty minutes of homework/homestudy prior to each school day. Brain research reinforces
this perspective and shows that a key feature of long term deep learning comes through continued low level
stimulation of your brain. Cramming prior to a test can get you through, but if you really want to learn, remember
and understand something, then you should consistently and systematically work at it. There are a number of
great study tools/ideas out there to help you with all of this.
Two of the study techniques that I think are really useful are Question and Answer cards, and Cornel Notes. Q &
A cards are simply ‘index’ style cards that you write questions or terms on one side, then answers/definitions on
the other. Keep flipping through these until you know them consistently. Another great study technique is Cornel
Notes. This involves taking all the pages in your notebook and drawing a vertical line down each page, about
three quarters of the way across. Then do all your notes in the three quarters of the page and use the remaining
space to the right of the line to write down key words or questions. When you go to study, cover the main notes
part and answer the key questions, or define the words. Many of you will know and use other techniques that
work for you, these are just two that I have found to be very useful.
A copy of your son/daughter’s tentative schedule is included with this mailout. Students have had multiple
opportunities to ‘fine tune’ this schedule. At this time we are not able to make substantive changes to student
timetables as we anticipate enrolling forty to fifty more students, opening fourteen or more new blocks, hiring
additional teachers and this will result in further timetable changes. Our first priority in September is servicing
new registrations and those students who do not have complete schedules, or who have taken a summer school
class and need to change a class on their timetable as they have already completed the course. Then we will start
balancing classes. Counsellors will be in the last week of August, roughly the 29 th through September 1st or 2nd
and students can access counsellors by grade and by day.

As we head into the new school year we have some enhancements to report. We have had all our portables
renovated and extensively renovated in many cases. Four of them were moved to different locations and we retain
six. We had the sound system in the gyms upgraded. This should make assemblies easier to run as well as
making the teaching and learning conditions better for everyone who works in the gyms. We’ve upgraded three
of our water fountains/water bottle filling stations and we have new recycling centres for paper, cans/bottles and
organics distributed throughout the school. We will use an online tool to assign lockers this year. Instructions for
how to do this are included with this package. Grade 8s will find a locker partner through homeroom on Tuesday,
then select their locker that day.
We are introducing a new app that will serve as our school agenda. The app is from Appazur and everyone
(students and parents) will be able to download it for free. We are able to push messages through this app, it is
district supported, and we hope to scaffold its functionality through the school. For example, the school can push
the daily announcements to all students, teachers can send reminders to their classes, etc. The potential for this
app is high and we will try and make full use of it. We also will be providing regular paper school agendas to
junior students who request them. Over time we hope to eliminate these with an App, but we are not there yet.
We were able to hire nine teachers through the round one and round two internal hiring processes in May and
June. These include teachers new to our staff and teachers who have taught here, but are now on a continuing
contract. Welcome officially to:
 Mr. R. Kerkhoven, Mathematics
 Ms. K. Lewis, Home Economics
 Mr. J. Struik, Science/Mathematics
 Mr. C. Grzeskowiak, Business Education
 Ms. L. Gray, English
 Ms. V. Froelich/Ms. V. Mau (job share) French
 Mr. M. Clarke, LST, Explorations, Humanities, International Advocate
 Mr. A. Quenneville, Science, Mathematics
 Ms. M. Brevner, Home Economics
We have not finished our hiring yet, and we will provide a further staffing update with future changes through
www.fhlearn.ca/
I encourage all students to make the most of what the school offers by intentionally choosing to get involved in at
least one outside of class activity. We have a large number of clubs, a comprehensive athletics program and a
student run school governance structure. We also encourage our parents to stay involved and aware of what is
happening at school. We have monthly PAC meetings, they are crisp and keep to an hour long framework. Our
first PAC meeting is September 20th at 7:00 in the school’s Learning Commons (library).
Please keep in touch with the school by monitoring our website, surreyschools.ca/fraserheights and through our
blog www.fhlearn.ca/
Once again we look forward to welcoming all students and families back to, or to Fraser Heights, and we wish
you all the best in the upcoming school year.
Mr. R. Breen

FROM THE COUNSELLING DEPARTMENT
Due to the high demand for counselling appointments in August, our counsellors will be
working with those students who have serious issues with their timetable before assisting
other students. Students with incomplete timetables, seriously unbalanced timetables, or
who need a change in order to graduate or meet university requirements, may come to the
Garage area at 8:30 a.m. to book an appointment on the dates specified below.
Students requesting less serious changes may be considered, depending on time and space
available, after the first week of classes. Generally, students are expected to take the classes
on their timetables and not seek changes unless absolutely necessary. Changes will only be
considered for compelling educational reasons.
Counsellors will be available in the Garage area at 8:30 a.m. each morning to book
appointments on the following dates:
Monday, August 29th
Tuesday, August 30th
Wednesday, August 31st
Thursday, September 1st

STUDENT INFORMATION - MEDICAL ALERTS
Each year, it is important that we have the most up-to-date information regarding your
child(ren). If there have been any changes in your child(ren)’s personal information such as a
change in address, contact numbers in case of emergency, or any changes in medical
information or dietary information, it is extremely important that you inform the school office
so we have it at our fingertips in case of an emergency. To update your child’s information,
parents or students can pick up a Change of Information Form from the office for you to
make the appropriate changes. Once the change form has been completed, please return it
to the office as soon as possible so that we can ensure that our information about your
son/daughter is accurate.

ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is a major factor contributing to student success in school. We expect
that students enrolled at Fraser Heights Secondary will attend school regularly and arrive to
class on time. If a student is absent, parents are requested to phone or email the school on
the morning of the absence. If this is not possible, please send a note with your child to turn
into the office on the day they return to school.
BUS PASSES
All students wishing to ride the school bus must apply for a School Bus Pass. This
application needs to be completed each year. If your son/daughter has not applied for
his/her bus pass, please have them go to the school office to pick up an application form.
HATS OFF
This is a reminder that Fraser Heights is a “Hats Off” school. Students are to take their hats,
baseball caps, toques, bandanas, and headbands off as they enter the school. This is
primarily for safety reasons as it allows our school staff to identify people who shouldn’t be in
our building much more effectively.
4|P a g e
LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY
In some cases, it may be necessary for students to leave school before the end of the school
day. Students wishing to leave the school early must come to the office and sign out. In
order to sign out, students must have written permission from their parent/guardian. In
cases where written permission is not provided, the office staff will contact parents or
guardians for verification.
PARKING
There are a very limited number of parking spaces for students on school property. Students
wishing to have the privilege of parking their car on school property must register their
vehicle at the office. There is no charge for student parking, however, parking spots are
available each morning on a first come, first served basis. Please Note: Students must park
in marked parking stalls. If our parking lot is full, we are allowed to park in the Surrey Parks
& Recreation parking lot along 160th Street.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
We recommend that students not purchase school supplies until they have met with their
subject teachers during the first week of school.
SCHOOL FEES
School Cash Online is an online parent portal that offers a safe, fast and convenient way to
pay for school activity fees. The portal is customized to meet your school’s needs and allows
parents to add students, make payments, check current balance/account history and print
or view receipts.
Please see the attached step-by-step instruction sheet.

PERSONAL PROPERTY
Fraser Heights Secondary and Surrey School District #36 do not accept responsibility for
loss, damage, or theft of any articles including clothing, school supplies, vehicles, equipment,
or cash. Our advice is leave valuables at home, or make sure they are locked up at all times.
SNOW DAYS
Usually during snow days when snowfall may cause problems with transportation and roads,
the Administration may shorten lunch by up to 30 minutes and dismiss students early. We
will use our synervoice system to communicate with parents.
SCHOOL CLOSURES
Sometimes extreme weather conditions or other unusual circumstances can cause a school
closure on short notice. In the event of a potential school closure during the school year,
please monitor the following radio stations:
CKNW (980 AM or www.cknw.com)
News 1130 (1130 AM or www.news1130.com)
CBC Radio (690 AM or www.vancouver.cbc.ca)
Please do not call the radio stations as staff are very busy receiving updates and preparing
newscasts. Surrey school closure information may also be broadcasted on the Weather
Channel and local TV stations. Whenever possible, the Surrey School District will post such
information on its web site at www.surreyschools.ca/fraserheights.
LOCKERS
Students this year will be able to choose their own locker on-line, please see the attached
information sheet on how to access this on-line system. They should also access this website
if they forget their locker combination. Students do not need to buy a lock or bring their own
lock from home. Lockers will have locks on them. Only school locks may be used on lockers.
At the end of the school year, students must turn in their locks to their homeroom teachers
or they will be charged a $7.00 lock replacement fee. School lockers are the property of the
school and may be searched by school officials at any time without prior notice. Students do
not have to use a school locker. The on-line student locker selection will open up as follows:
Grade
Grade
Grade
Grade
12 – August 29
11 – August 30
10 – August 31
9 – September 1
Grade 8 – Grade 8’s must share a locker. During homeroom on September 6-8 your
homeroom teachers will assign you a locker and a locker partner (if you have a partner
already please let the homeroom teacher know who you will be sharing with and only get one
locker assigned for both of you), then you will each go on-line and select the locker you and
your partner will share.

GRADE 8 RETREAT
Grade 8 students will be attending the school’s Annual Grade 8 Retreat at Camp McLean in
South Surrey on Friday, September 30th. Information regarding the Retreat and permission
form is enclosed in this package for all Grade 8’s. Please have your child return the
permission form to their homeroom teacher by September 9th.
SCHOOL CLUBS
Traditionally, Fraser Heights run a significant number of clubs. Information about clubs
that have run in the past can be found at surreyschools.ca – go to Fraser Heights – go to the
extra-curricular top tab and choose clubs. The list of clubs running in 2016/2017 will be
updated in the fall.
CODE BLUE CLUB
Code Blue: Code Blue is a new club at school that focuses on providing fitness training and information
to students considering a career in law enforcement, or the criminal justice system. It is open to all
students, but preferential treatment goes to students in grade 10 to 12. The club meets weekly, 3:00 pm
to 4:00 pm and is taught by one of our RCMP liaison officers.

Student Instructions
Students can access the application to select their locker and with some care and planning ensure that they share
their locker with their preferred locker partner.
1. Go to locker administration web site for the school.
2. Login using your student number as the user id and as the password.
3. Select a zone of the school in which you would like to have a locker. Note that as the availability of lockers
in a zone the zone buttons will change from Yellow (many lockers available), to Orange (over 50% of
lockers capacity assigned) to Red (no lockers available in zone).
4. When a zone is selected the available lockers will be listed. A locker entry that is Green is an empty
locker, and a locker entry that is Orange has at least one person in the locker already.
5. Select a locker and if you have a preferred locker partner contact them so that they can immediately login
and also select the same locker.
6. Once you have selected a locker you will be shown the locker combination. You can login at any time to
see your assigned locker and combination.
7. You cannot change your locker through the online application.
