Thanks to our neighbours, those who attended the funeral Mass; those who sent Mass cards, letters of sympathy. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Beaumont Hospital and St. Francis Hospice for all their care. Special thanks to Monsignor Alex Stenson for the lovely Mass and to Florrie for the beautiful singing. MUSINGS The famous American Trappist monk and spiritual writer, Thomas Merton (1915-68) once wrote that ‘the inspirations of the Holy Spirit are quiet, for God speaks in the silent depths of the spirit. It does not arouse excitement, but allays it, because excitement belongs to uncertainty.’ In another place he cautioned ‘If we strive to be happy by filling all the silences of life with sound, productive by turning all life’s leisure into work, and real by turning all our being into doing, we will only succeed in producing a hell on earth.’ **** Ragheed Ganni was a young Chaldean Catholic priest from Mosul, Iraq, who was a student at the Irish College, Rome. Despite the obvious dangers, he returned to Iraq after his studies to minister to his people there. Despite numerous threats he remained with them, claiming that ‘Without Sunday, without the eucharist the Christians in Iraq cannot survive’ and that ‘the Eucharist gives us back the life that the terrorists seek to take away.’ He would pay the ultimate price when he was targeted and killed by gunmen outside his church on 3 June 2007. Many Christians today continue to re-trace Christ’s steps when they are faced with sacrificing their very lives. Phone Mary Ryan 0872709767. 2 Prayer for the Middle-aged Lord, you know I am growing older, keep me from becoming talkative and possessed with the idea that I must express myself on every subject. Release me from the craving to straighten out everyone’s affairs. Keep me from the recitation of endless details. Give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips when I am inclined to tell of my aches and pains. They are increasing with the years and my love to speak of them grows sweeter as time goes by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong. Make me thoughtful and not nosey, helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom and experience, it does seem a pity not to use it all. But, you know, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Anon progress 301084 Portmarnock July-Aug 14 27/06/2014 15:26 Page 3 A WORD FROM FR. GARY On June 18th I travelled to Fatima with a group from Donaghmede and Edenmore Parishes. They were an absolute pleasure to be with, the pilgrimage was nicely balanced between religious ceremonies and time for oneself. Indeed the week went by so quickly; which is always a positive sign. It was my first occasion to visit Fatima. I went with an open heart and mind returning with a very positive attitude and spirit. In my experience Fatima is a peaceful and quiet place to find rest in the presence of Our Blessed Lady and be gently directed to her son Jesus. It is very much a place to find oneself in prayer. I speak of a sense of being given the opportunity just to be renewed in the presence of Christ. From time to time we all need this type of experience, it helps to ground ourselves in the Lord, nourishing our souls and spirits in prayer and reflection. It is no coincidence that the core message of Fatima is one of prayer, given that the ambiance is very inviting and tranquil Me pictured with the group leaders Noreen and Jim The many people there struck me, from various backgrounds and age groups. The hand of God was at work as people flocked towards this Marian Shrine, no doubt with their own needs and intentions. I took the occasion to remember our needs and prayers as a parish community. If you get the opportunity to visit this Marian Shrine I recommend it is an ideal place to be renewed in Our Lord through the direction of Our Lady of Fatima. Pictures show some of the images from the sanctuary of Fatima including a statue of Pope John Paul II. LOUISE FITZPATRICK BIG PICNIC IN AID OF BARRETSTOWN The 6th annual picnic took place at Malahide Castle on Saturday 21st June 2014. No worries about the weather, it was a beautiful sunny day. Loads of food and drink, lovely people, gorgeous babies, great music.....all added up to make a great Picnic. Just over €2000 was raised on the day, bringing the total over the six years to €16,406 ........this is a wonderful achievement and of immense help to Barretstown. Each year it costs almost €5 million to run the programmes at Barretstown - many young people with serious illnesses, including Louise, have benefited from a trip there. Our thanks to all who contributed to this fund. Thanks to Dunnes Stores, Portmarnock for very generously giving us the soft drinks and all the ingredients for the delicious sandwiches which were available at the Big Picnic; to all the sandwich makers who gave of their time and energy; to Deirdre, Richard, Anne and Dermot who organize the event so well every year; to those who brought food and cakes; to the musicians who were brilliant as always; to those who looked after the tent and to everyone who turned up on the day and who contributed in any way. progress 3 301084 Portmarnock July-Aug 14 27/06/2014 15:26 Page 4 750 CLUB FR. We have set up a specific e-mail address for such feedback. [email protected] And just a reminder of what you need to access this facility: You’ll need a computer (Desktop, Laptop, iPhone etc.) connected to the Internet via Broadband. Then you log into the Portmarnock Parish Website: www.portmarnockparish.ie On the Home Page, at the end of the left hand panel you’ll notice a page called “Webcam”. Click on this page. If you are using a PC you’ll be able to watch any ceremony that is taking place in the church. If you are using a mobile device, you’ll need to click on one of the images at the bottom of the screen. It’s as simple as that. There will be no live broadcasts on the Internet from St. Anne’s outside the times that ceremonies are taking place. We hope that people who are house-bound or parishioners living abroad will find this a welcome development. 4 Enjoying the celebrations with Fr. Micheál L to R: Mary Gallagher, Betty Ennis and Gerry Blacker June 2014 Dear Gabrielle and Margaret Please convey my heartfelt thanks to everyone in the parish for the wonderful celebration on the 13th June for the golden anniversary of my ordination. The wholehearted participation at the mass and the wonderful congregational singing made it a very special liturgy. I was particularly honoured and delighted that so many people came to celebrate with me. It was great meeting on a happy occasion and it was an evening that I will recall with fond memories. The only regret was that I didn't get a chance to have a chat with everyone who came. My thanks too to Sarah who organised the reception afterwards. As usual the talented bakers turned up trumps and produced a wonderful feast. Thank you to all who went to so much bother to ensure that no one went home hungry. I am well settled here in Eadestown, T.G., but a part of me still lives in Portmarnock. That is why I wished to have a mass there. Portmarnock is a very special and blessed parish. May it always be so. Thank you once again. May God bless everyone in St. Anne’s Micheál Comer P.P. Weddings Congratulations to the following couples who were married recently. St Helen’s SNS Parents’ Association 8th June 2014 Bottle Breaking in St. Helen’s Schools Dear Editor, Following on from our letter last September, we are happy to report, that due to the assistance of local residents and parents, the incidents of weekend underage drinking and bottle breaking in our schools (St. Helen’s NS) has reduced. However, as we have completed another school year, we would urge parents and local residents to be extra vigilant during the summer months to ensure this practice does not re-emerge. There were numerous incidents last summer where groups of teenagers would gather in our playgrounds during school closures and would not only engage in underage drinking but would then undertake needless vandalism by breaking the bottles. An Garda Síochána will continue to patrol these grounds on a regular basis over the summer months and convictions will be pursued if offenders are captured. Entry to a number of countries including USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia will NEVER be granted to people carrying criminal convictions. Teenagers should be aware of this fact if they are planning on engaging in this anti-social activity. Parents, please also continue to be vigilant in knowing the whereabouts of your teenagers and their activities over this period. We would like to thank all the local residents and parents for their assistance with this vigilance and would urge everyone once again, to play our part in protecting our young children and providing them with a safe environment in which to learn. To be awarded a Blue Flag, a beach has to meet strict criteria on water quality, safety, and litter, and visitor facilities must be top class. A second smaller flag 'Green Coast' is also flying at Portmarnock's beach. The Green Coast Award is regionally organised in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales. It is a symbol of environmental excellence and has been established to acknowledge, promote and protect the environment of rural beaches. These are also prized for their natural, unspoilt environment. An important aspect of the Green Coast Awards is the involvement of Clean Coasts groups of which there are now over 400 comprised of thousands of volunteers throughout Ireland. The awards form one part of a two stage programme called Clean Coasts. The second part of the programme is called Coast Care. Commendation must be given to the local Coast Care groups under the umbrella of the Portmarnock Community Association (PCA): ==> The Coastcare and Beach Committee, led by Angela Bury and Maire O'Brien, ably supported locally by many including Catherine and Betty. ==> The PCA's regular beach clean-up and involvement in the national Clean Coast and Spring Clean efforts. The launch of the national Clean Coast Week promotion campaign, organized by An Taisce, took place on Portmarnock's Velvet Strand this year. This received much national media coverage. An Taisce has been doing tremendous work in promoting beach and coastal management throughout Ireland. It also is the Irish co-ordinator of the Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards. In that respect much credit has to be given to Annabel Fitzgerald, Coastal Programmes Manager, An Taisce, who has spearheaded improvements in coastal management throughout Ireland. Annabel is a proud local Portmarnock resident and has always given good local advice and support. Footpath on Blackwood Lane Mick Lorigan, Fingal's Director of Transportation Services has confirmed directly that the footpath on Blackwood Lane is going ahead. Fingal Co Council's Property section and the Law Department are presently arranging the formal transfer of the lands required for the work at the location on Blackwood Lane. The landowner has always confirmed his co-operation in that undertaking. Once the legalities have been sorted out, it is hoped to advance the project. New Fingal Council Under the national 'Putting People First' programme Fingal County Council increased the number of elected Councillors from 24 to 40 in the recent Local Elections. Increased powers are expected to be provided to the local authorities and in Dublin the Area Committees will be key in local decision making. The Howth-Malahide Area Committee representation increased from five to eight members. The Howth-Malahide Area extends from Airside in Swords to Howth. This includes Holywell/Drynam, Kinsealy, Malahide, Cloghran, Balgriffin, Portmarnock, Baldoyle, Bayside, Sutton and Howth. In the recent elections there were three local Portmarnock candidates, Judy Dunne, Maire O'Toole and Brian McDonagh. The tally of the results show that there was a relatively low turnout of 40% in Portmarnock. This was caused not only by a number of people being away on holiday at the time but also probably disillusionment about national issues. However approximately 50% of the first preference votes in Portmarnock went to the local candidates. With transfers and eventually passing the Quota (approximately 2000 votes) Brian McDonagh was elected Councillor. The eight Area Committee Councillors elected represented a complete cross-section of the political spectrum. Ironically from a geographic point of view four of the Councillors live in Howth. Peter Coyle Flights of Fancy Third Annual Southern Cross Day 15th June 2014 This year the Southern Cross Day was a wonderful success. We were blessed with the weather and as a venue the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links was ideal. Many thanks to the hotel and their very hard-working staff for the venue, the great barbeque food and the terrific service. As ever the grant from the Dublin Airport Authority was invaluable and we are very grateful to them as it covers all the hidden extras that go into making the day possible. The singers and musicians were amazing. The Sea Sharps Barbershop Chorus were on top form and opened the afternoon under musical director Dennis O’Hora. The group from the Portmarnock Singers looked and sounded great and their outfits were so elegant. Ray Crawford on guitar and Donal Branagan on ukulele kept us entertained. Donal is a ukulele virtuoso and is always a delight to watch. Thanks also to Bridget Heffernan for her set – what a voice! A big special thanks to Tony Kenny for putting in a surprise appearance. We all loved his Al Johnson set. The afternoon would not have been complete without the appearance of the Bathing Belles with their brilliant dance routine to the music of ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’. Many thanks to Catherine for her choreography and her patience. The afternoon ended with Mr Gay and his City Gents. They blew us away and we could have danced all night. It was great to see Pat Fox and his lovely old car. It just added to the glamour of the day. Many thanks , Pat. This year Patrick Maguire brought along some of his friends from the 1930s Swing Dance Group. They were spectacular to watch, their outfits looked amazing and it encouraged us all to get up to dance. Again, many thanks for contributing to the success of the afternoon. If you are a caregiver aged over 50 years and living with a partner who has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia you may be interested in taking part. Please see details below. Study background In Ireland much of dementia care is provided by informal caregivers who are frequently spouses. This type of care is a vital and invaluable resource associated with better quality of life and positive health outcomes for the person with dementia. However, it can be challenging for the person providing care. We feel it is extremely important that the impact of caregiving on the caregiver is considered and that the health and wellbeing of caregivers is understood and protected. Aims for the study Our research is looking to gain an insight into the health and wellbeing of Irish spousal dementia caregivers, and to examine what factors are associated with both positive and negative health outcomes for caregivers. For example, we will look for factors that might protect people from the effects of stress. The ultimate goal is to inform policy, future research and the development of targeted interventions in order to improve caregiver health. Participants needed You might be able to help us. We are looking for people who are aged 50 years and over and providing care at home for their spouse or partner with dementia. What’s involved? One baseline assessment at the beginning of the study and an optional follow up 12 months later. No travel is necessary. We can visit your home or meet in a local centre at your convenience. Assessment involves: • answering questions about your role as a caregiver, your lifestyle and your wellbeing. • completing tasks that measure various aspects of mental function e.g. memory and attention. • providing saliva samples (optional), which can be used to examine physiological data on stress and genetic factors that may be linked with healthy ageing. The study is funded by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and the Health Research Board under the Medical Research Charities Group funding scheme. There is still some work to be done in the autumn. Our thanks to FCC workers on the ground for the work they are doing and for continuing to liaise with our Beach Committee. Soil is not suitable for dunes as it will not support dune grasses and would eventually lead to their disappearance. The grasses hold the sand dunes together. Some are salt tolerant and can endure whatever the waves throw at them. Marram can grow through the sand deposited by the wind and develop long root systems from which they can regenerate thus creating tall dunes. Human pressure on the dunes speeds up their breakdown. This is the reason why we ask people and sports teams not to use the dunes for training or exercise. The dunes also support a vast array of flowers coming into bloom at different times of the year. Butterflies and bees thrive on the nectar from these flowers. Blue Flag and Green Coast Flag for Portmarnock How delightful it was to behold two flags fluttering over our Velvet Strand by Thursday 5th June. Not only had we seen the return of the Blue Flag but it was joined this year by a Green Coast Flag! Only 8 beaches in Ireland succeeded in gaining both awards! The Blue Flag is recognition of the excellent water quality as well as fulfilling all the other safety requirements necessary to gain this award. Ongoing work on the beach and dunes It was very much a race against the clock to meet the deadline for the flags and make our beach and dunes safe for visitors. Portmarnock coastline had taken a hammering with the winter storms but fortunately was saved the devastation suffered by beaches on the west coast of Ireland. Thanks to the vigilance of our Beach Committee they noticed that the contractors employed by Fingal were depositing soil on our dunes and beach as part of the repair work. Some of this soil had to be removed but the rest was used to fill in behind the SEPT AUG JULY Diary Dates The Green Coast Flag The Green Coast Flag is awarded as recognition of local community input. It is a symbol of environmental excellence and has been established to acknowledge, promote and protect the beaches throughout all of Ireland and Wales. Our Beach Committee as well as our volunteers who do a fortnightly clean-up of beach and dunes throughout the summer and autumn can take credit for this award. We are grateful to the management and staff of Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links for supporting our efforts. Happy Holidays! We wish all in our community a very happy holiday be they at home or away. Let’s hope the sun keeps shining us like last year glorious summer!! Contacting the PCA If you have concerns about issues in our community why not contact us. Mobile 087 3858254.
