Ender is made commander of Dragon Army and given a
group of soldiers. His army is given an unprecedented
number of realistic gaming battles to face, with
advantages given to the enemies at each level, but he
wins every one. Each platoon of his army acts as an
independent unit, and this revolutionizes battle room
strategy. He ends up beating out his friend, Petra’s,
Phoenix Army.

As a student, Ender’s life revolves around two kinds of
conflict. One is the constant rivalry with his fellow
students. He must always prove he is the leader who can
save Earth from the buggers, and physically and mentally
fights off bullies who also want to be leaders.

More importantly, he plays simulated war battles against
his teammates and the Buggers, conflicts that require
him to use his genius and talents to win over and over
again.

sentence. How is the theme revealed in the

The question of what it means to be human is taken up
several times in Ender's Game. In the first place, children
are affirmed to be just as real human beings as adults,
even as the children are robbed of their youth. It is, after
all, a group of children who save the world.

But more fundamentally than this, to be human is to have
compassion. The ability to feel for others is the mark of
humanity and Ender's is what saves the planet.

Ender is telling his sister Valentine why he hates himself.
He is able to understand and show empathy to his
enemies better than anyone else. And he’s had lots of
enemies in fellow students, his brother and the Buggers.
But once he understands them he then destroys them.
This means that when he crushes them he is hurting
himself in the process.
