Adverbs
Adverbs have a difficult job
because it must modify 3
different parts of speech.
What are they?
An adverb modifies:
1. Verbs
2. Adjectives
3. Other adverbs
* They are words that give
the reader even more
details!

Class Examples:
 Away,
here, inside, there,
up
 Ago, later, now, soon,
then
 Clearly, easily, quietly,
slowly
 Always, usually, never,
continuously
An adverb answers these 5
questions:
1. Where?
Place the cupcakes
over there.
2. When?
We will eat the cupcakes
later.
3. How?
Michael Phelps swam
incredibly fast, winning the
Olympics.
Michael Phelps swam in the Olympics.
*See the difference one word can
make?
4. How often? or How long?
He always passes every
spelling test with an
Jill and Jerry will be together
forever.
5. To What extent? or…
How much?
Shelly’s new baby is
very, very small.
*The way adverbs are used, one
may assume that the baby is a
preemie after reading this
sentence.
