Spring time in Texas and Bluebonnets go hand-inhand but did you know that back in 1901, when the Texas
Legislature was nailing down all of the official state mascots,
something of a flower war ensued as three different speakers
each nominated a different bloom and argued passionately in
support of his or her particular choice? According to TAMU,
the cotton boll was nominated because it was an economic

“king” at the time, but because cotton really isn’t much to
look at, it was shot down. Next, a fellow who later became
Counter Schedule
known as “Cactus Jack” nominated the prickly pear cactus for Fellowship Schedule
its hardiness and exquisite “orchid-like” beauty. In the end,
Birthdays/Anniversaries
however, even the vibrant prickly pear flower paled in
comparison with the bluebonnet, which was nominated by the IPC Online
Newsletter Submissions
National Society of Colonial Dames of America.
Here are some more interested facts about our state flower:
 Bluebonnets usually bloom in early March, hit their peak
in late March to mid-April, and linger much less gracefully as temperatures rise through May. Spring rains generally mean healthier bluebonnet plants, so keep those
rain dances coming and we’ll surely have a beautiful crop
this season in Austin. By the end of May, if you do find
a bluebonnet, it will be a scorched and pitiful little thing,
only a shade of its former glory.
 Believe it or not, the bluebonnet is actually toxic if ingested. Leaves and seeds from the entire Lupinusplant
family are poisonous, although actual toxicity is determined by a number of different biological and environmental factors. Even animals steer clear of bluebonnets
when they get the munchies, so be sure that none of your
kids decide to have a bluebonnet snack during family portraits!
 Nature always has a way of surprising us — just when
you think you have something figured out, nature will
throw you for a loop every time. For example, bluebonnets are quite simply blue and white flowers, correct?
Wrong. Most bluebonnets are blue and white, but the
flowers actually come in varying shades of pink, purple, and white as well. Some botanists have even succeeded in creating “Aggie Maroon” and “Barbara Bush
Lavender” blooms! http://austin.com/7-crazy-things-you-never-knew-about-texas-

Coastal Bend Troop Support
CBTS is a non-profit organization whose mission is "Letting Our American Heroes Know We Care." Care
boxes are packed on the 2nd or 3rd Friday of each month, (depending on events) and mailed to individuals serving in war zones. Purchasing and packing is done by Worker Bee volunteers who show up
at the building every Wednesday and Friday from 1-3 p.m. On the weeks that we are not boxing, we are
preparing purchased and donated items for the monthly boxing. If you would like to help, the address is
1141 S. Church St. in Rockport, Texas. For more information about Coastal Bend Troop Support, contact
the IPC Mission Committee or call Carla Reed, President, at 361-205-4046. You may also visit the CBTS
website at: www.coastalbendtroopsupport.com.
To the Ladies and Gentlemen of Coastal Bend Troop Support,
Blessings to you and your families. Since my arrival here last May, I know one thing is
certain. Without fail, we will receive outstanding care packages from Coastal Bend Troop
Support.
On behalf of my team and all of the US and international service members that witness your caring and generosity, I am sending a heartfelt thank you. We are humbled and
grateful for the amount of support we continue to receive from individuals and organizations like yours. We truly appreciate you and everything you do for us.
Again, thank you for your support, caring, generosity, and time.

SECOND 2016 BLOOD DRIVE - APRIL 3
Island Presbyterian Church and Padre Island Rotary Club are jointly sponsoring 6 Blood Drives in
2016 to help support our community’s need for donated blood. MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
2016 BLOOD DRIVES
April 3
June 5
August 7
October 2
December 4
The Coastal Bend Blood Center collects nearly 30,000 units of blood yearly to supply 13 medical facilities in 10 Coastal Bend counties. The Blood Center provides blood to a service area with more than half a million Coastal Bend residents.
Our SECOND Blood Drive of 2016 will be held on Sunday, April 3, from 8am to noon. The Blood Bus from the CBBC will be in IPC’s
parking lot on the 3rd, so all you have to do is come to church a little early or stay a little late and donate blood. If you have never
been a blood donor, but would like to give it a try, this is an excellent opportunity. And to top it off, there will be delicious sweet treats
for all the donors.
As a result of our having blood drives here, an account has been set up for IPC at the Blood Center to credit us for our donations. If
you are a member/regular attendee here at IPC and need a blood transfusion, whether you have been a donor or not, you will be
eligible for credit toward the blood you need. Our account is good for one year from the date of the blood drive, which means we
have to continue having blood drives to keep it active!
There will be a sign up poster in the back of the sanctuary, so you can select the time you would like to donate. If you weigh at least
110 pounds and are at least 17 years old, and in good health, you can donate. Even folks on blood pressure medication, as long as
their blood pressure is under control, as well as diabetics, can donate.
If you are able, please make the decision to be a blood donor – it truly is the GIFT of LIFE! Also, please pass along this information
to your friends and neighbors and invite them to donate here at IPC – Sunday, April 3, 2016!
Many thanks to the 13 donors who gave the GIFT of LIFE at our February blood drive!!

Looking for a way to get rid of your gently used
kid’s toys & clothes?
Island Presbyterian Church is hosting a Mom 2 Mom Sale!
April 30th from 9am-2pm
No fee to shop, donations accepted*
What is a Mom 2 Mom Sale you ask- A Mom to Mom sale is a large indoor sale where
moms (dads, grandparents) can rent tables to sell their children's outgrown gently used
items to other moms and dads. They are a great place for new expectant moms to find
maternity wear, baby carriers, baby gear, cribs, bassinets, bouncers, and items that moms
and new baby may need. It is also a great way for moms and dads to keep up with their
growing children’s needs of clothes, toys and furniture without breaking the bank. This
sale is a great way for moms and dads to sell off what they no longer need.
Tables still available!! Table Rental- $20 (per 8 foot table) Nonrefundable
Space is limited, first come first served. Rental must be paid in advance by mailing to
Island Presbyterian Church at 14030 Fortuna Bay Dr. CC, TX 78418 or contact Jennifer

On March 10th the Mission crew hosted a dinner for the IP
congregation in appreciation of the support of our February
Desserts & More Auction.
Now we have to thank you again. This time it is for cheerfully
decorating and filling 110 blessing bags before you sat down to
eat. We delivered the bags to Good Samaritan Rescue Mission the
following Thursday. The staff and clients were delighted with
the bags and it was a great experience for all of us. With your
support, we will continue to serve the homeless community. Five
local agencies have expressed an interest in our bags. We have
set up our command center in the youth room for the time being
with shelves for the blessing bags goodies and supplies. The
ridiculously organized Donna Linnane keeps meticulous records
of what is purchased, what is spent and where it goes. Much of
our revenue comes from the sale of dog treats.
Speaking of dog treats, check out the spiffy new treat basket
on the back table in the sanctuary. Treats are $5.00 per bag
and each bag contains a list of ingredients. All dog treats are
baked from scratch and donated by mission team members.
The next Blood Drive will be held on April 3rd in the parking
lot. Give blood, Save a life. Get a cookie. Everybody wins.
The Coastal Bend Troop Support Crawfish Boil is scheduled for
May 28th. Details forthcoming.
Please remember that the Mission Team is here to serve the
community on behalf of the Island Presbyterian congregation. We
want your input and ideas and you are always welcome to join us
on the 2nd Monday of the month at 12:30 at the church.

Pet Memorial Wall in Chapel
We now have a special place in which to memorialize our beloved four-legged
friends who have left this world and are patiently waiting for that time when God calls
us to be reunited with them in our new heavenly home. On the right hand wall as you
enter the Chapel, you will see a beautiful painting, by our resident artist Karen
Winship, which serves as the focal point of our pet memorial wall. It will soon be
joined by an engraved plaque designating the “Pet Memorial” area and framed copies of “Till We Meet
Again at Rainbow Bridge.” To honor your pet, please purchase the “pet tag” of your choice at a local pet
supply store or online, have it engraved and place it on the wall below the painting. Pushpins are available nearby on the Chapel table. To preserve the dignity of the wall, it is strongly suggested that all pet
tags be of “standard” size. You may wish to have the tag engraved with your pet’s first name and your
last name and appropriate dates. That is up to you! The shape of the tag is your choice as well! F.M.I.,
call Barb Reynolds.
ANGELS IN APRONS
Generally when a need for providing meals for families within our IPC
community arises, the Deacon who has that individual or family in his/her care
group, contacts the other members of that specific group and the situation is
resolved. There are times, however, when others wish to help and we want to
include them. We can now do that since a group called “Angels in Aprons”
simply formed itself! Although “Angels in Aprons” evolved spontaneously, it has
been increasing in size fairly rapidly through word of mouth.
As a means of sharing God’s love, “Angels” volunteer to join care groups in providing and delivering
periodic meals (by schedule) to individuals or families who are experiencing difficulties and appreciate
receiving a helping hand. The group is by no means “elite” or “closed”- it just happened and we don’t
want anyone to feel “left out.” If you’d like to be added to the “Angels in Aprons” list and contribute to
overall congregational care by whipping up a meal every now and then, let us know. Believe it or not,
some of our “Angels” don’t even like to cook! They prefer delivering “carry out” meals and that’s
okay! Others like preparing “crock pot” dishes, casseroles, & family favorite comfort foods, a few are
“health enthusiasts”, and there are those that like to practice their culinary expertise preparing
epicurean delicacies.
As you can tell, our “Angels” live up to the expression that “variety is the spice of life.” You can join by
contacting Barb Reynolds, the current scheduler, or notifying any Deacon.
