Monday: We practiced

April 29, 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,
A superb and eventful final week of April! Here are some highlights:
Monday: We practiced the letters “W”, “X”, “Y” and
“Z” in our printing books. We’re finally done
reviewing all the letters and sounds. Students
should be proficient at proper alphabet letter
formations by now. Students chose 10 spelling words
that they’re having difficulty with and wrote them in
their agendas for review week. In Writer’s
Workshop, we practiced writing a free verse poem
and began working on our very own informative “All
About” books. In
Math we began estimating length and choosing
different units to measure with. In Science we
shared and reviewed different safety tips when
dealing with hot or cold temperatures. We also
learned about different ways to heat up or cool
down a room.
Tuesday: We practiced our word building skills during a Making
Words lesson. We sorted different words into the “tion” and “ain”
family. In Writer’s Workshop we looked at more sample “All
About” books and focused on writing with use of precise nouns,
vigorous verbs, and transitional words. In Math we practiced
measuring different objects in stations using nonstandard units.
In Social we learned about the early history and past of the Inuit
of Iqaluit. In Science we began learning about insulation. We
tested different materials to see which one could keep an ice cube
frozen the longest. We had our special Math-a-thon celebration
assembly in the afternoon. Thanks for your contributions!
Wednesday: The students went outside for DPA to start the day. We had the
pleasure of watching the ECS Spring Concert dress rehearsal in the morning. In
Math we continued working on estimating and measuring length. In Social we
continued our discussion on the early days of the Inuit people. In Science we began
learning about animal adaptations and insulation. We reviewed our word wall
words with a fun class Spelling Bee game. We exchanged for new books during
Library.
Thursday: In Writer’s Workshop we focused on
writing with clarity and detailed steps. We continued
working on our “All About” books and practiced peer
conferencing to aid with our writing progress. In
Math we learned about how to estimate and measure
by using just one copy of a unit. In Science we
watched video clips about animal insulation. We
discussed different types of insulation in everyday
life. In Art we began by practicing
the comprehension strategy of
Visualizing. Students know that means to make mental images in
their head as they are reading. We read the story Owl Moon without
looking at the pictures and practiced our visualization. Students
transferred their image in their head into a drawing and
illustration.
Friday: Sportball came and taught our
class Handball first thing in the
morning. We had our class photos and
everybody looked snazzy! Mr. Smith
came and led the class through a
building project. Students all have fancy
new tool boxes! Thank you very much to
the amazing parents that came out and
volunteered and everyone else for
sending in hammers. Afterwards, Mr. Smith read some captivating Shel Silverstein
poems for the class. We had hot lunch and CASH IN. We wrote our spelling check
ups and practiced marking and editing them for our peers. In Math we practiced
estimating and measuring items in the classroom with one copy of a unit. In Art we
continued our Owl Moon visualizing pictures.
