Students should be provided with sound instruction rather than repetitive exercises on specific questions. • Monitor use of practice test items as bell ringers. This practice can be misleading to students. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 16 My only skill is taking tests Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 17 What Not To Do! One day, a man was walking his dog down the street when he ran into his neighbor. He said “Guess what! I taught my dog how to talk!” “That’s incredible.” the neighbor exclaimed. ”Have him say a few words.” “Oh, the man replied. “I just taught him. He didn’t learn.” Source: Evaluative Inquiry Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 18 Remediation Strategies and Activities Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 19 Strategies • • • • • • • • Review Learning Stations Visual Writing Prompts Comprehensive Quizzes/Four Square Flash Cards Remediation Packets Games Exit Tickets Plant and Animal Coded Worksheets and HW Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 20 Activities See Handouts! Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 22 Test Taking Strategies Mission Possible: Meet or exceed the standards On state tests Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 23 “Jail the Detail” Highlight, underline, or circle details in the questions. Also, read the questions first when you have a long reading passage, and mark the text as you read to be able to go back to important details quickly. Why? Because it helps me focus on exactly what the questions are asking. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 24 “Be Slick and Predict” - Predict or guess what I think the answer might be BEFORE I ever read the choices. Why? Because sometimes I can guess the answer, but if my guess is wrong then I can guess again. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 25 “Slash the Trash” -Read ALL choices, MARK OUT the ones that I KNOW are WRONG, then choose my answer from the one or ones that are left over. Why? Because marking out the choices that I know are wrong allows me to see the choices left and I know the right answer is one of those. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 26 “Extra Extra – Read all About it” If the directions say READ, then I will READ. I will pay close attention to the important words. Why? It is always important to follow the directions and ALWAYS read the directions carefully. Just like a recipe instructs us to make a meal or bake a cake, the test directions instruct me so I’ll know what to do. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 27 “Be a Whiz Kid with the Grid” Beware! If the answer is not bubbled correctly, I COULD GET IT WRONG. Make sure to check regularly, say every five questions, and make sure the number on your answer sheet matches the number of the question in your test booklet. WATCH OUT for DONUTS!! Why? If a the bubble leaves a white circle in the center – it may not score correctly. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 28 “ Keep Going and Going and Going…” If I get to a couple of questions that I just don’t know, I won’t give up! I will just keep on going like the Energizer Rabbit. I can always go back to it and guess if I have to. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 29 “Plug it In – Plug it In” Once I choose my answer, I will plug it in and make sure it makes sense. USE THIS especially with vocabulary questions. Why? When I have to choose the correct vocabulary word to fill in a blank, I should read the sentence using each word choice. This will help me choose the word that makes the most sense by how it sounds. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 30 “Be Smart with Charts!” Look and read ALL information on the CHART before answering any of the questions. Analyze the chart to understand how it is set up and what information it provides. Analyze the chart to understand how it is set up and what information it provides. Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 32 “If you Snooze, You Lose!” DO NOT leave any question BLANK! Why? I will not have any chance of getting it RIGHT! Sheila Smith - October 27, 2011 33 “Check it Out!” When I have finished answering all the questions, GO BACK and CHECK my WORK! Why? Just like when you watch a movie or read a book the second time, you will notice things you didn’t the first time through. Take time to check your work!
