D R A M AT U R G Y N O T E
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible premiered on Broadway in 1953 and won the Tony Award
for Best Play. The play is a retelling of the events of the historical Salem Witch Trials,
which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692-1693. In February of 1692 Betty Parris
and her cousin Abigail Williams, two young girls in the Salem community, began
behaving erratically such as tantrums, throwing objects, and contorting their bodies
in strange ways. Other girls and young women began exhibiting the same behavior,
and townspeople then began being accused of witchcraft. In addition to two dogs,
twenty of the men and women accused were executed at Gallows Hill as a result of a
long and questionable trial process. Much of the evidence was later proven false and
perniciously garnered. The only way in which an accused person could avoid punishment
was to confess to witchcraft and they were encouraged to accuse other members in the
community.
In 1952, Elia Kazan, a colleague of Arthur Miller, went before the House Un-American
Activities Committee (HUAC) and, unwilling to jeopardize his promising career, named
8 other colleagues as having affiliation with the Communist Party. At the time, the main
way in which to avoid punishment, which often included imprisonment and loss of
career, was to name others as having membership in the Communist Party. The events of
Kazan’s trial lead Miller to visit Salem, Massachusetts, and research the Salem Witch Trials,
drawing parallels to his era. Miller himself was subpoenaed to appear before HUAC in
1956.
In The Crucible Miller explores the preservation of morality in the face of severe
consequences through the character of John Proctor. With beautiful and precise writing
he navigates issues involving mass hysteria and fear, particularly when governmental
powers enforce this toxicity on their communities with devastating results. Miller warns
that no matter how average a person may be, they can fall victim to false allegations and
pursuits. Through his characters, Miller shows that all people, despite our many faults,
have an inherent obligation to uphold certain standards of morality. Above all, Miller
uses this play to demonstrate how easy it can be for a society to become corrupt and to
make dubious examples of its own citizens in the face of any threat to power, whether
the threat is real or not.
