A green energy solution
Thinking beyond insulation. We all know traditional insulation works
as a simple barrier that slows the transfer of heat. That’s a good start, but we have now
gone beyond insulation to develop Phase Change material technology that absorbs and
releases excess heat as needed. The result? Buildings that want to stay at a prescribed
temperature throughout the day, consuming less energy and keeping room temperatures more constant.
How It Works
Phase Change materials absorb and release heat at pre-set temperatures. It is engineered
around a fundamental property of nature: the natural tendency of materials to absorb
heat when they melt (phase change from solid to liquid) and to release heat when they
solidify (phase change from liquid to solid). All materials exhibit this behavior, however
there are some in particular that go through this phase change at or near room temperature, absorbing and releasing heat in the process.
When these Phase Change materials are placed in quantity into the structure of a building, they absorb heat during the day and then release it at
night. This makes the entire energy cycle more energy efficient. Less Kwh are used to heat and cool buildings while Phase Change material intelligently captures and releases otherwise wasted energy.
By absorbing
AND
releasing heat, structures can
AND WILL
maintain a constant and
comfortable
building temperature.
Phase Change
materials increase
the comfort,
safety and
efficiency
of buildings by:
• reducing indoor temperature fluctuation
• reducing need for heating and cooling
• reducing greenhouse gas emissions
• reducing overall energy use
• shifting energy usage away from peak demand
for today’s needs.
Applications
Fabral’s Phase Change systems are installer friendly and can be integrated in both roofing and wall systems for new construction and retrofit
applications. This flexibility encourages end-user innovation in taking advantage of Phase Change energy storage properties. That’s high-performance, smart building technology ready to help you “go-green” efficiently, quickly and easily.

Proof of Performance
Third Party Testing
Confirms Energy Savings
Energy savings from Phase Change materials
enables smaller, more efficient heating and
cooling units to be installed. Some climates
can completely eliminate air conditioning. Third
party public utility testing confirms up to 30%
overall energy savings when Phase Change materials are installed. Direct savings are realized by
reduced electric and gas utility bills and lower
heating and cooling costs.
Questions and Answers
FAQs
Still have a few questions? Here are some excellent FAQs.
Q: What are Phase Change materials?
A: Phase Change materials are compounds that liquefy and solidify at specific temperatures. The point at which a substance changes phase can
be set at room temperature so the substance absorbs energy above the Phase Change temperature and releases the energy once the temperature drops below the Phase Change temperature. This process reduces temperature fluctuations and makes buildings more energy efficient.
Q: What is an everyday example?
A: Water. Ice cubes absorb the latent heat from a glass of water until the ice has melted then the liquid becomes room temperature. That same
glass of water at room temperature and placed into a freezer will give off latent heat energy until it becomes ice again.
Q: Is this a new type of insulation?
A: Phase Change materials are not insulation. Insulation works by increasing the thermal resistance of a building, slowing the flow of heat in and
out of the structure. Phase Change materials work by increasing the thermal mass of a building increasing the time it takes for the structure of a
building to warm up or cool down.
Q: Do Phase Change materials replace insulation?
A: Phase Change is not intended to replace insulation; it is intended to complement insulation. All energy savings from Phase Change would be
in addition to any savings from insulation. This is one reason why the addition of Phase Change to a structure is so effective.

Q: Can the product be installed into existing buildings?
A: There are many methods by which buildings can be retrofitted.
Q: What happens if the product is punctured?
A: Phase Change is a safe, biodegradable product that can be cleaned with soap and water. Phase Change is designed to fit Fabral panel profiles
so it will not be fastened in areas that contain actual Phase Change material. Phase Change is also encapsulated in a material so when it transitions from solid to liquid, it remains in a gel state.
Q: How long will the product be effective?
A: Phase Change has been cycled through 85 years of life in a laboratory and the performance has not been impacted.
Q: How will Phase Change impact my utility bill?
A: Much of your heating and cooling will be moved to off peak hours because the energy will be stored in Phase Change until later in the day
when utilities bill less for electricity.
Q: What are some other common applications for Phase Change materials?
A: Phase Change materials have been used for many years in other types of applications. Pizza delivered by some national pizza restaurants
utilize Phase Change materials in their food delivery bags. Color changing labels on beer bottles utilize Phase Change materials.
