Another theme of the play is the Hero’s Journey. This
journey could be a quest for an object, a personal goal or
winning a contest. What is Percy’s quest? Did he have
more than one?
The other main characters have personal journeys as
well. What are Annabeth and Grover’s quests? How do
they intertwine with Percy’s?
What is the significance of the “Tree on the Hill”?
What challenges did each encounter that enabled them
to complete their personal journey?
Oracles are notoriously vague, but here she is quite clear
that Percy will fail to save what he values most. Was this
prophecy right or wrong? In other words, was Percy
successful in his quest, or did he suspend it for the
greater good?
Modern theatre is often represented by a pair of masks, one smiling, one
frowning. These masks of comedy and tragedy were used in ancient
Greek theatre to display the emotions of the actors. The masks themselves represent Thalia, the smiling Greek muse of comedy, and Melpomene, the frowning Greek muse of tragedy. Would you consider this a comedy or
a tragedy. What is the definition of “Comedy” and “Tragedy”?
