OUTSTANDING
SPAIN
SUMMER DRINKING
The diversity, quality and value for money
to be found amongst Europe’s indigenous
white wines continue to surprise and delight
The Society’s buying team. Improvements in
technology, the dynamism of winemakers and
myriad growing sites and terroirs all combine
to produce delicious, exciting wines with a real
sense of panache.
This selection of 20 wines, the vast majority
priced at under £10 per bottle, represents
our recommendations for optimum drinking
pleasure over the coming summer months.
From fresh, grapy muscat and fragrant,
spritzy vinho verde to characterful, crisp
picpoul de pinet, this selection
encompasses the best of local southern
European grapes and styles.
We also list three mixed cases on the
back page, highlighting the impressive whites of
Southern France and the Iberian Peninsula. For
members looking to stock their wine racks with
some southern European sunshine, our mixed
dozen at £79 offers exceptional value for
money, especially with a nigh-on £10 saving
to encourage you all to take the plunge.
Cruz de Piedra Macabeo, Calatayud 2013
This great-value white is made by Bodegas Virgen
de la Sierra who have superb high-altitude
vineyards (750 to 1,100 metres above sea level)
in Calatayud, a lesser-known region south-east of
Rioja. Made from the local Spanish grape
macabeo, this is a clean and fruity white with
attractive lemony flavour and just a hint of fresh
herbs. Tremendously easy drinking. 13.5%
