Page |1 FREEZE CONTROL SYSTEM INSTRUCTIONS This Kit includes: 1 x Alcohol Tank, 1 x Stainless Clamp, 1 x Pressure Release Valve, 1 x Brass T-fitting, 1 x Pressure Gauge, 1 x Nylon Reducer Bushing, 2 x Brass Barb Fittings, 1 x 4’ Airline piece, 1 x 14” airline piece and 1 x 4” Airline piece 1. Install one of the 3/8” Brass Hose Barb fittings into the threaded hole in the bottom of the Alcohol Tank. 2. Install the Pressure Release Valve onto the Alcohol Tank by pushing the 4” Airline piece onto the 3/8” Brass Hose Barb installed on the bottom of the Tank in step 1. Push the other end of the 4” Airline Piece onto the middle hose barb on the Pressure Release. 3. Mount the Alcohol Tank to the windmill leg about 5 feet off the ground using the provided clamp. If using with an Electric Aerator you can mount the Alcohol Tank to two pieces of rebar, or whatever you have available. 4. Attach the airline going out to the pond to either the left side or right side 3/8” hose barbs on the Pressure Release Valve, preferably the barb closest to the direction of the pond. These two barbs work either way. 5. Attach one end of the 14” length of airline to the remaining 3/8" hose barb on the Pressure Release. The hole on the bottom of the Pressure Release has no function. 6. Install one of the ends of the 3/8" T-Fitting in the open end of the 14” length of airline as per the diagram, with the remaining barbs pointing both upwards and towards the aerator. 7. Install the other 3/8” Brass Hose Barb fitting into the top of the tank and attach one end of the 4’ length of airline to that fitting. 8. Attach the open end of the 4’ length of airline to the top barb of the T-Fitting as pictured. 9. Attach the open end of the airline coming from the aerator to the remaining barb on the T-Fitting. 10. Fill the tank with a 90-99% pure de-icing fluid capable of vaporizing. Tank volume is 11.2 litres, suggested fill amount is no more than 90% full or 10 litres (2.6 gals Imperial, 2.2 gals U.S.). You will need to find a local source for the fluid; veterinarian supply stores typically carry it in large enough quantities. There are three kinds that Koenders recommends due to their relative low toxicity, in order of most preferred: -Isopropyl Alcohol -Methyl Hydrate (used in Air Brake Line Antifreeze) -Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol) Regular Antifreeze (ex RV Antifreeze) will not suffice. The Freeze Kit only injects liquid when ice has already formed and thus requires a de-icer. 11. Install the pressure gauge into the nylon reducer bushing and install the reducer bushing into the top of the Alcohol Tank. When finished, your freeze control should appear similar to the picture. If an obstruction occurs in your airline due to condensation droplets freezing in the airline, your freeze control system will start to work. When pressure in the airline builds up to approx 18 PSI, the Pressure Release at the bottom of the Freeze Control tank will open and release a small amount of de-icer vapor into the airline, allowing the airline to clear. Once the airline clears the pressure is released allowing the valve to close again. 09/17/2015 This material is copyrighted by Koenders Water Solutions Inc. and cannot be reproduced without prior approval. Page |2 Troubleshooting The freeze kit isn’t operating Normal operating pressure for your aeration system is approximately the depth of your airstone divided by 2.3. The Freeze kit will only start injecting fluid around 18 PSI. Your aeration system will generate a maximum of 25-30 PSI if there is a total blockage. If the gauge on the tank is below 18 PSI then it is working fine. My tank empties rapidly Normally the Pressure Release will only allow a small amount of liquid into the line as a blockage slowly forms. However if the tank was not in use and the line becomes completely blocked with ice, the full backpressure on the Pressure Release will cause it to inject alcohol rapidly. If the gauge is reading 25-30PSI it is best to only fill it with a small amount of de-icer to prevent wastage. In this situation the airflow cannot carry the de-icer to the blockage so you will have to wait for the de-icer to vaporize and make its way to the blockage on its own. This will take time, the length depending on how far the blockage is from the Alcohol Tank. Liquid is leaking out of the Pressure Release The small screws may need to be tightened. Do not tighten to the point that it deforms the plastic. Will this hurt my Fish/Pond Life? The small amounts that go into the pond get diluted to the point that the toxicity is negligible. Winter kill is far more likely to come from the oxygen levels depleting in the water if the aeration is blocked. 09/17/2015 This material is copyrighted by Koenders Water Solutions Inc. and cannot be reproduced without prior approval.
