Exponent Notes Vocabulary base – the big number that is used as the factor Example: In 23, 2 is the base. exponent – the small number (power) that tells us how many times to multiply the base by itself. Example: In 23, 3 is the exponent. exponential form – a number shown by using a base and an exponent Example: 23 factor form – a number shown in a multiplication sentence Example: The factor form of 23, is 2 2 2 standard form – the answer (the regular way to write a number) Example: The standard form of 23 is 8. squared – the base to the second power Example: 52 can be read 5 squared cubed – the base to the third power Example: 23 can be read 2 cubed Solving an Exponent Reading Exponents 5 base → Solving an Exponent 53 = 5 3←exponent Any number to the 0 (zero) power is always 1 50 = 1 Any number to the first power is always 251 = 25 61 = 6 5 ↓ ↓ 25 5 ↓ 125 5 to the third power 5 to the power of 3 5 cubed 30 = 1 5 1000 = 1 itself 101 = 10
