Five Kingdoms of Living Things By: Rachel Levi Quarles Elementary School Objectives: 1. The student will describe the characteristics of each of the five kingdoms.. Overview of Content Standards: the Virginia Standards of Learning: Science: 5.5b The student will investigate and understand that organisms are made of cells and have distinguishing characteristics. Key concepts include the kingdoms of living things. Computer Technology Standards: C/T5.3 The student will process, store, retrieve, and transmit electronic information. Technology/Media Components: Web sites: • http://www.unitedstreaming.com - Video entitled “Biology: The Science of Life: The World of Living Things” Student Materials: Per student: • Science binder w/ notebook paper • Pencil • A copy of “Family of Living Things” worksheet (available on http://www.unitedstreaming.com ) Per class: • A large monitor or projector connected to a computer for whole-class instruction Teacher Preparation and Resources: Preparation: • The teacher needs to check the availability of all technology needs. Resources: • A copy of the science requirements for a fifth grader. • A text or other source of background information on the five kingdoms. also (available on http://www.unitedstreaming.com ) • Activities: Step 1: Direct Instruction: Review the term classification and its uses in science. Discuss the general characteristics of living things. (Life processes) Step 2: Indirect Instruction: Watch the 15 min. video as an introduction to the five kingdoms. Step 3: Direct Instruction: After watching the video, have students review the life processes and go over what the five kingdoms of living things are. Be sure that students understand that the kingdom stage is the first of seven levels of classification. In their notebooks students are to list the five kingdoms and their characteristics: whether or not they make their own food, ability to move, cell structure, and construction. Step 4: Independent Study: Students are to use the information received above to complete “Family of Living Things” worksheet for homework. Assessment: Formative: • Questioning of students during direct instruction. Summative: • The students will complete a worksheet consisting of a table in which they will describe the characteristics of each of the five kingdoms. Creating a Classification Chart By: Rachel Levi Quarles Elementary School Objectives: 1. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the five kingdoms and their distinguishing characteristics. Standards: Science: 5.5b The student will investigate and understand that organisms are made of cells and have distinguishing characteristics. Key concepts include the kingdoms of living things. Activities: Step 1: Step 2: Direct Instruction: Go over the rubric with each student, be sure to clearly explain what he or she is to make, create a sample on the board. Independent Study: Take the class to the computer lab, they are to work independently to create a chart that begins with living organisms divides them into the five kingdoms providing a picture and the characteristics for each. The student is to save their work and print a copy for the teacher. Assessment: Summative: • Using a rubric score the completed chart based on the depiction of knowledge of the five kingdoms. Rubric for Classification Chart Name:_____________________________ Date:______________________________ Directions: You are to create a chart using Inspirations software, which shows living organisms split into the five kingdoms. Each of the five kingdoms needs to have the characteristics listed below and a picture to go with it. To get the pictures you will copy them off of the internet and paste them into your chart. Grading: Skill Five Kingdoms listed Pictures Whether or not it makes food Whether or not it can move How many cells it is made of Does the cell have a nucleus Total Points Earned Points Possible 10 10 10 10 10 10 60
