We have a busy term planned ahead with many special events including our Mother’s Day afternoon. This term is also NAPLAN testing time and assessments will be held on May 9th, 10th and 11th for our Grade 3 and 5 students. We also have many extra-curricular activities including winter sports (Gr 4-6), walk to school, breakfast clubs and school discos! We also welcome our new student Marcel to our Foundation class. We are sure you will enjoy your time with us at our Snake Valley Campus. ANZAC DAY SERVICE We are very fortunate to live in a safe and war-free country. On Monday our captains led the ANZAC Day service at our school. Our students laid a wreath made from special poppies which was then taken to the Snake Valley memorial to show our appreciation for the efforts of our servicemen and women. Badges, wristbands, poppies are still available for students to purchase from the office. All funds raised support the wonderful work of the RSL. Please support this organisation. SPORTS DAY Well done to all students on their efforts and participation at our sports day. Unfortunately the weather had an impact on forcing the cancellation – student safety comes first! Thank you once again to our P&F committee for preparing and running the canteen and for parents who volunteered to offer assistance. Many left-over products will be used for school lunches or at other events. Congratulations to Maddie Lewis who broke the record in discus! She threw 22.47 m. Our sports champions for the day were Bryce W and Maddie L. Special recognition certificates were presented at Monday’s assembly. SCHOOL GROUNDS Thank you to Jackie and Sammy (and families) for caring for the school chooks over the holidays. The school grounds are looking quite neat but we would love some parents to help with continued maintenance such as raking leaves and clearing paths. Thanks to Nicole Fox Humber and Beau who worked hard over the weekend preparing the vegie patch beds ready for planting. Nicole also has spent a great amount of time sourcing garden manure . We will soon be planting winter seeds and batches of strawberries! We are still seeking some parents to spread the soft fall mulch which was delivered last week. This is to be placed under the playground equipment to prevent injuries and keep the areas safer. If you are available please see the staff. Our next working bee is scheduled for Sunday May 21st from 10-12 p.m. The following families are rostered on to attend: Beauchamp, Breen, Burrill, Ensor, Humphrey-Brown, Lambert, Milner, Pritchard, Smithman & Waters. “IT’S COOL TO BE AT SCHOOL” Page Page 2 2 Woady Yaloak Primary School Campus Report YOU CAN DO IT ORGANISATION Nelley CONFIDENCE Cody PERSISTENCE Jazz SPECIALIST AWARDS OF THE WEEK PERFORMING ARTS MOTHER’S DAY AFTERNOON TEA After such success last year, we will once again be offering an afternoon tea for mums, grandmothers and significant others on THURSDAY 11th MAY. Our event will commence at 2:15 p.m. Students will pamper you, offering delicious afternoon tea and spend some quality time with such significant role models. Special invitations will be sent home this week and we look forward to this great event. SPORTING SCHOOLS During term 2, students have the opportunity to participate in basketball and hockey for the Sporting Schools Program. We are extremely lucky to have the Ballarat Miners running the basketball clinic on a Monday afternoon and Kelly Sports running hockey on a Wednesday afternoon. The Sporting Schools Program is a great opportunity to get children involved in sports and active in their local communities. If you are involved in either activity we ask that you see it through and attend every session. (Mrs Hughes – Sporting Schools Co-ordinator) SCREEN TIME There is regular commentary in the media regarding the impact on personal wellbeing of young people who spend excessive time on digital devices. In an article in The Sunday Age (April 9, 2017), a report was given on research undertaken by Ms Delaney Ruston (American doctor and film-maker) on the impact of excessive screen time. Her research finding that - “Excessive screen time can lead to problems such as decreased attention span, problems with developing social skills and a risk of real clinical addiction” which can impact on academic study – points to the need for parents to implement strategies for screen free time. We encourage all parents to limit time spent using electronic devices and ensure digital devices are charged in a central location at night, not in your child’s bedroom. Research also indicates digital devices impact on sleep patterns and that it can have a very detrimental impact on their health and wellbeing. We expect results to be returned towards the end of this term. COACHING During the holidays I attended a Teaching to Lead professional learning course. This course focuses on learning skills about influencing others and improving school environments. There is also an aspect of coaching being offered as a focus. Last week, Mr Harris, Mrs Trigg and myself completed two days focussed on GROWTH coaching. We gained skills in becoming a coach – someone who takes the time to have focused conversations with others to help them maximise their capabilities. Coaching is about a way of leading and learning. We are very fortunate to be able to offer coaching to our staff and reap the rewards of such effective practice. We know that the benefits of coaching sessions improve teacher practice, develop behaviours, facilitate change and encourage results. If you need help see Rhonda :) GIFTED WRITERS WORKSHOP YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED AT THE WORKSHOP JAZZ, ROSE AND I WENT TO!!! It was an amazing experience, filled with wonderful things! As soon as we arrived, we were split into colour groups, I was in light blue, Rosie was in purple, and Jazz was in green. We then got introduced to the teachers in the program, Mr. Day was the leader during it. Once we finished the introduction, we saw a video about a kid in the first grade, that was given a task to draw a scientific drawing of a butterfly, he tried to do his first one, but it wasn't that good, so his friends gave him some advice, so he tried again, the second one was better, but it still wasn't that good, so he talked to his friends, again. His friends gave him some more advice, so he used it, and made a better one, so on, so on. Until he made his sixth draft, which was the final one, it looked exactly like the butterfly he was given the task to draw. After that we saw Doug Bradby - the author of Seriously Weird Histories, again, he was talking about how his grandpa first moved from England, to Australia. When he took a carriage to Geelong from Ballarat, the mother didn't have enough money to take all four of them back, so she told Doug’s grandpa to walk back to Ballarat… it took him two days! After Doug finished his story about his grandpa, we went for a tour around he Ballarat Mechanics Institute, it was filled with history. We were told that the building was rebuilt because the roof started to collapse. Within its walls, there is a theatre, the floor was made from wonderful, polished wood. It used to be famous, and performers from miles away came to perform at it. Once we finished in there, we went for a tour of the old library, filled with old books from about a hundred years ago! And really, old newspapers. We then went for a visit at the new library, filled with books that seem very, very interesting. Once we finished the tour, we went back to our class, and where given the task to write a Ballarat Mechanics Institute blurb, to try and persuade people to enter. Mine was good, but not as good as the other ones. We then had morning tea, that was the chance for me to get to know others. The people I got to meet where interesting and nice! Once we finished we researched Ballarat and looked at the gold veins, there are a lot of them. We then went for a lunch walk to our lunch spot. It was nice to see the sights. It was an amazing spot and we really enjoyed our lunch. When we returned, we were writing a news article from old newspapers that we thought would be interesting today, of course we didn't finish it, but it was great. It was time to go home, but before we left, Mr. Day told us that Showbie is for writing, not chit chat. Hope you enjoyed, JP. SENIOR PLT DAY Last term the gr 5/6 went to ross Creek fro a cyber safety day. We had a lady come and talk to us about the safety with technology. Here are 5 things that happened: 1. The lady talking 2. All the presentations 3. When we had to pair up with people we didn't know 4. We had a survey to answer 5. We watched a video about bullying. By Maddie & Charlie “IT’S COOL TO BE AT SCHOOL” Snake Valley Campus Page 5 The 2017 Attitudes to Schools Survey We want our student to tell us what they think Our school is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training. The survey assists schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school between Monday 22 May to Friday 23 June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. Students from Year 4, Year 5 and 6, at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Students privacy is our priority Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes only. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file. This survey is not a test and your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion. Want to know more?
