by first stopping in Padua, a picturesque city with a dense network of
arcades, streets opening into large squares. Visit and Mass at the
Basilica of St. Anthony before we proceed south towards Florence,
where we arrive in the late afternoon. A visit to Florence is a visit to the
living museum of Italian Renaissance. The Renaissance began right here
and the city bears witness to the proud spirit and unparalleled genius of
its artist and artisans. This place has more sights to visit within one
square kilometer than any other city in Europe. It is also a shopper's
paradise: countless shops laden with jewelry of Florentine gold and
silver, exquisite leather goods, chic fashion houses and the straw market
where you will find great bargains. Check in at our centrally located
hotel, and have dinner at a local restaurant nearby.
March 7, Wednesday: Florence: Morning tour of Florence: first we’ll
visit the Accademia Gallery, the center of art known from the medieval
time which houses the magnificent statue of David by Michelangelo. We
will walk to the lovely Piazza del Duomo to admire S. Maria del Fiore
Cathedral, Giotto’s Campanile and the Baptistery’s incomparable bronze
doors by Ghiberti, known as the Gates of Paradise. We will then see
Piazza della Signoria, the city’s most beautiful square with marvelous
statuary and fountains, the Palazzo Vecchio and the 14th century Ponte
Vecchio. Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of Santa Croce, the
principal Franciscan church of Florence, burial place of Michelangelo,
Dante, Galileo, Machiavelli and other illustrious Italians. Afternoon free
for shopping on the Ponte Vecchio for gold and silver jewelry or visit the
daily straw market.
March 8, Thursday: Siena/Assisi: Today we tour South Tuscany and
Umbrian countryside, a gentle land of hills and valleys where St. Francis
lived. Stop in Siena, the birthplace of Catherine and many famous
artists. Visit the black-and-white Duomo with scenes inlaid in the
marble floors and sculptures by Michelangelo. See Piazza del Campo
dominated by the Torre del Mangia. The traditional Palio, a unique
horse race that runs along the ring of the square, takes place here twice
March 3-12, 2012
each year. In the afternoon continue to Assisi, a city of birds and silence
built of pink stone, enclosed by ramparts and hardly changed since the
middle ages. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its art and
architecture, and the home town of St. Francis. Tour the church of St.
Clare, fronted by a terrace from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of
the Umbrian countryside, then walk the narrow streets to St. Francis
Basilica, consisting of two superimposed churches and a crypt, where
we celebrate Mass. The whole building was consecrated in 1253 and
houses famous frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue. Accommodation and
dinner at our hotel.
March 9, Friday: Montefalco/Rome: Morning Mass at St. Mary of the
Angels Basilica, standing on the plain where St. Francis and his
companions built huts round a dilapidated chapel restored by the saint.
Inside is the little chapel of the “Porziuncola,” where St. Francis
consecrated St. Clara as the Bride of Christ and where he had the vision
which inspired the Pardon of Assisi. Before we head South to Rome we
stop in Montefalco to visit a famous winery and taste the special
“Sagrantino” wine. Afternoon arrival in Rome, the Eternal City built on
seven hills, capital of an Empire to which it gave its name, and the seat
of Christianity. Rome is rich in relics of its past and was for a long time
the first museum-city in the world. Today it is the center of Italian
political, administrative and cultural life. Accommodation at our central
hotel and dinner at a nearby restaurant.
March 10, Saturday: Rome – Vatican and Christian sights: In the
morning visit the Vatican Museum, housing treasures like the Raphael’s
rooms, the Gallery of the Tapestries, the Gallery of the Geographical
Maps and the Sistine Chapel, a masterpiece of Renaissance art, and the
place where the conclave meets, with the magnificent Last Judgment by
Michelangelo. We will then visit St. Peter's Basilica, the world’s largest
basilica built on the tomb of the apostle Peter. Mass will be celebrated in
the Vatican crypt. In the afternoon we will continue our guided tour of
Rome by bus, visiting the other main basilicas and religious sites
including St. Mary Major, St. John’s Lateran and St. Paul’s outside the
walls.
March 11, Sunday: Rome - Imperial & Classic sights: Morning
guided tour of the Imperial sights: Rome’s past and present come alive
as you see Piazza Venezia, the Roman Forum which was the city's
religious, political and commercial center in the days of Caesar, the
Circus Maximus and the Palatine Hill, and finally the Colosseum, the
Flavian amphitheatre dating to AD 80. Visit St. Peter’s Square for the
Sunday Papal Blessing. Proceed on foot to visit the most famous and
charming squares of Rome: the Trevi Fountain, a grandiose late
Baroque monument, the Spanish Steps, dominated by the majestic
stairways of Trinità dei Monti, and the Pantheon, an ancient building
perfectly preserved, founded in 27 BC by Agrippa, a former temple then
converted into a church. Free time to stroll around the scenic Piazza
Navona, a large square built on the site of Domitian’s Stadium, adorned
by the Baroque masterpiece, Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers.
Farewell dinner this evening at a special Roman restaurant with music.
