Substitutions
A Roster Form must be submitted in advance as indicated below. Coaches may substitute
Team Members or Individuals until the close of registration on the day of the San Diego
Chapter Competition.
Testing Format
An announcement will be made at around 9:15 am telling the students where to report for the
Sprint Round. The proctor will lead them to the rooms. The Individuals will compete in a
different room than the team members. The procedure for each test will be presented by the
proctor. Proctors will allow students to leave the testing room during the breaks. Individuals
can form informal teams to take the team test, if they desire, but only the raw score will be
provided. The Countdown Round is a fast-paced one-on-one competition. If guests can only
be at one part of the event, this is it. The rules for the Countdown Round will be presented to
the students and audience. Please refer to the MATHCOUNTS Handbook for rules and
formats for all tests. The Coordinator will make all decisions affecting the results of the
competition. Coaches can pick up their tally sheets after the awards are given. The
MATHCOUNTS Coordinator makes final decisions on the rules interpretations and scoring
questions.
Advancement to State
South California Competition at UC Irvine on March 12, 2016. The teams and individuals that
will advance to state competition will be announced at the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
Coaches for teams advancing to state and Individuals advancing to state will be contacted by
the State MATHCOUNTS Coordinator for further information.
The top four (4) teams will advance to State based on overall Team scores at the Chapter
Competition. If the winner of the Chapter Competition is a magnet school and/or has won the
Chapter Competition for the second consecutive year one additional team will be allowed to
advance to the State Competition. No more than one additional team per chapter is allowed to
advance in this manner.
The top five (5) students, who are not on an advancing School Team, will advance based on
the individual score (Sprint and Target Round only).

Round will not have an impact on advancement to State. Student may decline to compete. In
this case, the next highest scorer will be allowed to compete. We usually run through last
year’s questions informally prior to this round in the same room.

Making This Happen
The San Diego competition is organized and executed largely through unpaid volunteers.
UCSD provides the venue for free. Local engineering societies donate funds for the awards,
food, equipment, rentals, supplies and post-event mailings. The Greater San Diego Area Math
Council publicizes the event. We usually have a speaker tell the students about the
engineering profession, as MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of
Professional Engineers.
