THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Animalia Arthropoda Insecta Odonata Gomphidae Taxon Name: Melanocacus mungo (Needham, 1940) Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1 Year Published: 2009 Date Assessed: February 8, 2007 Justification: Known to have an extent of occurrence of 150,400 km² and from seven locations; hard to see and collect due to habits, probably more widespread across lowland Amazon forest. Geographic Range Range Description: Occurs in Suriname, French Guiana and Venezuela (Needham 1940, Geijskes 1946, Belle 1970, de Marmels 1985, Machet 1991). Country Occurrence: Native: French Guiana; Suriname © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Melanocacus mungo – published in 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2009-2.RLTS.T158902A5289998.en 1 Distribution Map © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Melanocacus mungo – published in 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2009-2.RLTS.T158902A5289998.en 2 Population The species is known from seven locations and thought to be more widespread across lowland Amazon forest although no population data is available. Current Population Trend: Unknown Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) Adults in shady gallery forests of savanna and evergreen jungle, where they roost high on trees; females descend to water to oviposit, males never descend (Belle, 1986). Larva described by Needham (1944) and Belle (1970), breeds in sandy bottomed streams among decaying leaves. To metamorphose, it crawls to roots and twigs of bank vegetation or steams and leaves of water plants (Belle 1986). Systems: Freshwater Threats Threats to this species are not known. Conservation Actions Surveys to establish current distribution, trends and confirm absence of threats needed. Credits Assessor(s): von Ellenrieder, N. Reviewer(s): Clausnitzer, V. & Paulson, D.
