Play in Colorado's first State Park and enjoy
swimming, hiking, biking, wildlife, a 9-hole golf
course, a Nature Center with gift shop, kayaking,
boating and archery. Everyone loves Lathrop State
Park. Just 3 miles west of Walsenburg on Hwy 160.

To really disconnect from life's hectic pace, hike the
gentle trails that can be found throughout Spanish
Peaks Wilderness areas. Or take a drive and enjoy
the breathtaking views and unspoiled vistas. Marvel
at the Endless expanses of wilderness and wildlife.
Take your enjoyment to a higher level...hike the
Spanish Peaks. All told there are 65 miles of trails in
the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area, all accessible
from Highway 12, the Highway of Legends. Stop by
the U.S. Forest Ranger's office in La Veta on your
way south on Hwy 12 or stop in Cuchara at the
Visitor's Center for maps and trail info. Guided hikes
are also offered by the Cuchara Valley Recreation
Programs, accommodating all ages and skill levels.

Parades, Rodeos, Art, Music & BBQs
In Spanish Peaks Country, they take the 4th of July
very seriously. Throughout the County, you will find
parades, festivals, fun-runs, old-west movies,
rodeos, a mud-fest, BBQs and the customary
fireworks display.

Celebration of Hispano Heritage in
Spanish Peaks Country

La Veta traditionally celebrates the 4th of July with
'Art in the Park' which is a 2 day event and a long
running institution. No factory made items here and
NO Admission fees either. What you will find is
plenty of distinctive handmade artesian wares,
antiques, farmer's market, food and live music. The
booths in the Town Park open for business at 10 am
on both Saturday and Sunday of the July 4th
weekend.
This year's theme for La
Veta's Independence
Day Parade is "The
American Dream", with
participants showing
their interpretation of the
American Dream in
costume, contraption, or
a traditional float.
Saturday evening local
Ranchers show off their
bullriding, mutton bustin' and
team roping skills at the
Ranch Rodeo on the
Huerfano County Fair
Grounds in La Veta.
Also on Saturday, the Francisco Fort Museum will be
showing old west movies in the Saloon on the
Museum's campus.
Never to be outdone by
their neighbors, the small
mountain community of
Cuchara puts on a 4th of
July like no other.
Cuchara's Americana
4th of July kicks off with
a Family Fun Run/Walk
which is followed by the DIY Parade on Main Street
at 11 am. All day Saturday, the Village of Cuchara
will be a buzz of excitement with live music, dancing,
food, drink, miniature golf and a BBQ. Then of
course there is the Deck at the Dog Bar and at the
Timbers Restaurant.

and food. The kick-off will
