Join us Saturday, October 6 for the Alzheimer’s Association signature nationwide fundraising event,Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Become part of this group of individuals, corporations and organizations that are proud to lead the fight against Alzheimer’s. Start a team with your family, friends and coworkers or walk as an individual and choose between a one-mile or three-mile course. This is a community event featuring entertainment, refreshments and fun the entire family can enjoy. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and over time become severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. There is no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Current Alzheimer’s treatments can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s. Did You Know? n The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter provides support and services for the surrounding 24 counties and five cities n As many as 5.4 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s n 130,000 persons have the disease in Virginia n 26,000 persons have the disease in the chapter area n The chapter serves over 11,000 persons a year n 90% of the chapter’s services are provided free of charge n Every 68 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s n The disease affects 1 in 8 persons over 65, and almost 50 percent of those 85 and older The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care and support and the largest private, non-profit funder of Alzheimer research. The Greater Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is located right here in Innsbrook. Although there is no registration fee for this event, walkers are encouraged to make a personal donation and raise money for the cause. Raise $100 or more and receive an official 2012 Walk t-shirt.
