Welcome to the 42nd
GTM Germany Travel Mart™
The German National Tourist
Board welcomes you to the
evening event accompanying
the biggest marketplace for
tourism in Germany.
You are invited to share your GTM experiences
on Twitter using the hashtag #gtm16.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
welcome to the state capital
Magdeburg, welcome to our
city, in the heart of Germany
and right in the middle of
Europe!
The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt is deemed
as the heartland of German history, and also its
state capital looks back on 1,200 years of eventful
and colourful history. In particular, it was the first
Roman German Emperor “Otto the Great” and
the inventor and diplomat “Otto von Guericke”
who significantly shaped the fortunes of our city
and made it known far beyond its borders.
Petra Hedorfer
Chief Executive Officer
German National Tourist Board
Today, the state capital Magdeburg is a European city between tradition and the modern era.
This can be seen and experienced in an exciting
combination of culture, history and urban life,
which in turn, forms the basis of our candidacy
for the “European Capital of Culture 2025”.
I wish you a successful GTM as well as a pleasant
stay in Saxony-Anhalt with lots of new impressions,
interesting encounters and perhaps new friends!
Dr. Lutz Trümper
Mayor of the state capital Magdeburg

1 Maritim Hotel
The Maritim Hotel Magdeburg is situated at the centre of the regional capital of Saxony Anhalt.
The modern architecture of the hotel and its open atmosphere with the impressive 32 m high glass
gallery attract business and private travellers as much as conference delegates. The Cathedral District
with regional parliament is within easy walking distance from the hotel.
The Cathedral District
Today’s cathedral square once hosted the palatinate of Otto the Great. The Gothic Magdeburg
Cathedral towers majestically above the city’s
Cathedral District. Construction work on the
Gothic cathedral took place between 1209 and
1520. Prior to this, the site of the current cathedral housed an Ottonian cathedral constructed
in Romanesque style. Inside the cathedral,
visitors can marvel at the stone sarcophagus
of Emperor Otto I and the tomb of his first
wife Edith.
The square commands attention with its fountains and displays of recent excavations, and it
also hosts annual open-air events in summer,
such as Magdeburg Theatre’s DomplatzOpenAir.
Magdeburg’s Cathedral Square is surrounded
by historical buildings in the baroque style of
the 18th century that were faithfully rebuilt
after being destroyed in the Second World War.
The buildings to the north of the square are
used by the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt,
and the Ministry of Justice is based in the former old and new Möllenvoigtei buildings on
the east side. The historical walls of house number 5 on the square now contain a hotel, and to
the west you will find the modern building that
houses Nord LB bank and the Regional Investment Bank as well as the Hundertwasser house.
This symbiosis of the historical and the modern
has a unique architectural appeal. And thanks
to its political and cultural appeal, Cathedral
Square is once again one of the prime locations
in Magdeburg.

Sights along your way
2 Leiterstrasse with Faun fountain
In the courtyard of the Leiterstraße, which was
first mentioned in 1263, you can sit down and
relax in one of the many restaurants whilst
enjoying the view of the bronze Faun Fountain
with teasing mythical creatures designed by
Heinrich Apel (1986).
tors can now still admire the Romanesque
style of the buildings’ original outline, twin
tower façade and transept.
3 Breiter Weg
The Breiter Weg was already one of the
city’s main traffic arteries and stunning
boulevards back in the 13th century. Only two
Baroque patrician houses recall the splendor of bygone days. Between 1962 and 1970,
the northern section of the street was rebuilt
as a Magistrale, a socialist-style high street
with buildings made form prefabricated concrete slabs.
5 The Green Citadel of Magdeburg
Alongside Magdeburg’s multitude of impressive historic buildings, another attraction
has been fascinating visitors to the city since
2005. THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG is
the name that Friedensreich Hundertwasser
gave to one of his last architectural projects.
With its ocean of colours and shapes, 900
different windows, gold globes and sweetly
scented flower meadows on its rooftops and
undulated floors that rise and fall in gentle
waves creating “a melody for the feet”, this
buildings fascinates its visitors and is a paradise for all.
4 Cathedral Church St. Sebastian
The foundation stone of the Cathedral Church
St. Sebastian was laid by Archbishop Gero in
1015 and in 1169, the building was consecrated
as a Romanesque basilica. After a fire the building was transformed into a Gothic hall church
in the 14th and 15th centuries. Nowadays, visi-
6 Monastery of Our Lady
A major attraction along the Romanesque
Road and the oldest surviving building in
Magdeburg is the Monastery of Our Lady,
which is now home to the city’s Art Museum.
With its collections and exhibitions, the
Museum has become the most important
location for displaying sculptures and contemporary art in Saxony-Anhalt. The building
was originally constructed as a Romanesque
monastery in the 11th and 12th centuries.
7 Magdeburg Cathedral dedicated to
St. Maurice and St. Catherine
Emperor Otto the Great commissioned the
construction of Magdeburg Cathedral in 955.
It was later destroyed by a city fire and then
re-erected as the first Gothic cathedral building on German soil in 1209. Magdeburg’s landmark boasts a monumental interior containing internationally renowned original exhibits
representing nearly all periods of art history,
for example the original tomb of Emperor Otto I
and his first wife Edith.
8 Romanesque Art Centre
The “Road of Romanesque” runs through
Saxony-Anhalt in the shape of figure eight.
The route links 80 testimonies to Romanesque
architecture over a length of 1,000 kilometres.
Magdeburg is the start and end point of the
northern and southern itinerary. The capital
of Saxony-Anhalt – imperial city and favourite palatinate of Otto the Great – set up the
Romanesque Art Centre directly adjacent to
Magdeburg Cathedral to impart to visitors
information about worthwhile destinations
along the “Road of Romanesque”. The exhibition in the InfoCentre gives insights into
the medieval world of itinerant emperors,
knights, monasteries and convents and ordinary people.
