Ephrata Recreation Center’s GOLDEN YEARS CLUB Volume 59, Issue 1 Spring/Summer 2014 Club News Wow, what a winter. According to my calculations it has been 65 inches of snow, 2 inches of ice and 6 days of missed school since we last met. It also has shown on the faces of those coming through our doors longing for a Florida or island getaway. The groundhog didn’t do us any favors either with his winter prediction. With that in mind, I am sure many of you do not realize there are some Rec staff and Golden Years Club members who have their own predictions based on whether they see their shadow on Groundhog’s day. For instance, Jean saw her shadow which means she will have six more weeks of a big smile across her face. Russ Shirker saw his shadow meaning the Yankees will have six more weeks of trying to find major league talent and Jean Price saw her shadow meaning she will have six more weeks before dancing at the Rec’s March 22 Nomads dance. Harold Sweigart saw his shadow meaning he has six more weeks of being grumpy. And I saw my shadow meaning I was outside on a sunny day. Hopefully by the time you read this the worst has passed. The Rec staff has been working through the cold to plan our monthly soirees with good food and fun entertainment. In March, we will be visited by the Lancaster Historical Society for a presentation on Rich Brewing Heritage in Lancaster County. April is an encore presentation from the Ephrata High School Jazz Ensemble. In May we have the return of comedian Ken Hussar. Ken puts on a great show and is the first act I booked when I took over GYC Director duties. In June we are treated to a performance by the Lancaster Senior Symphony Orchestra. Our annual fun and games picnic in July will be followed by Frankie Widder performing favorites on his trusty accordion in August. There are some Rec happenings as well. After a highly successful launch of the Silver Sneaker program, we have brought back Silver and Fit. Both programs provide free Rec memberships depending on your supplemental Medicare insurance. There are also free fitness classes with these including aerobics, aqua and Yoga. Be sure to check the class schedule in the new Rec program brochure. The popularity of these has necessitated adding new classes. The Rec is having an indoor swap meet on Saturday, March 8. Rent a table and make some money while cleaning out your unwanted treasures, or come out and buy stuff so your grand kids will have more to clean out of your house when you move into the new housing project at the old Doneckers Art Works. Speaking of which, we will have reps from Keystone Villa at a meeting in the near future to discuss this project. And as mentioned before, the Rec is hosting the Nomads on Saturday, March 22. Always a good time, these guys play all of your favorite dance tunes from the 50’s and 60’s. Whew, as you can see there is a lot going on at Golden Years and at the Rec and I hope to see many of you over the next few months. And back to that shadow thing, hopefully seeing my shadow means six more months of smiles, laughs and fun at GYC meetings.
