understanding the information on your paycheck

UNDERSTANDING THE INFORMATION ON YOUR PAYCHECK
The paycheck/stub opens by tearing both the side and top tabs.
1. Employee: Payee
2. Tax Status: Federal and State tax withholding status information is taken directly from
the W-4 form completed by the employee. Form DE-4 must be completed when the
State withholding status is to be different than the Federal withholding. The
employee’s status becomes “Single” with “0” when a W-4 form is not received by
Santa Barbara Unified School District. This rule applies as well when the W-4 on file
becomes ineligible per IRS guidelines.
3. Pay Date: Date the check was issued or the direct deposit will post at your financial
institution.
4. Period Ending: Each paycheck covers your wages for a certain pay period. This date
is the last day of that specific period.
5. Leave: The balance of Sick Leave and Vacation hours (if applicable) available for use.
Please note: Any time taken in the current month has not been deducted from the Sick
Leave and Vacation hour balances.

IMPORTANT
You will be paid once a month, on the last day of the month. If the last day of the month falls on
a weekend you will be paid on Friday.
Your pay is determined by your hourly rate of pay, the number of hours worked per day, and the
total days worked in a school year. Holidays and vacation (classified employee only) pay are
included in this calculation.
In most cases, your first paycheck will be a lesser amount and the remaining months will be
divided evenly for the remainder of the school year.
Please note that your paycheck will have all the employee/*employer deductions which included
state and federal taxes, Medicare, social security and other fringe costs as well as SBTA/CSEA
dues, insurance deductions and if applicable, CalSTRS/CalPERS (retirement) deductions.
*Employer deductions will not deduct from your pay.
