ISS 240 Winter 2012 Syllabus Art and Society Instructor – Karl Griffiths-Fulton Contents 1 Introduction 2 Course Details 3 Observation Journal, Group Assignments (two students per group) and Final Project 4 Tests 5 Tentative Schedule 1 Introduction 1.1 Course description Art and Society This course will explore the interplay between art and society, with a primary focus on Western arts and literature since Industrialisation. The course exposes students to various ways art has been used to influence society. Also, the works of specific artists/works of art will be examined and how social context and perspective impacts both the art and the way it is perceived. Readings and course work will highlight how art has been used to address various social issues. Topics covered include how art and the artist influence and are influenced by: politics, religion, spirituality, psychology, aesthetics, multiculturalism, economics and environmentalism. 1.2 Location and Time Lectures: REN 2107 Monday 6.30 -9.20pm Lectures are delivered with the aid of slides which will be available for students to download from D2L before the lectures. Slides do not replace lecture notes; students must be prepared to attend and take notes. Attendance is not mandatory but in-class assignments and other activities will take place regularly; failure to participate will forfeit grades. Tests: Two in-class tests, February 13th and April 2nd. 1.3 Instructor Karl Griffiths-Fulton Email: Hours: by appointment 1.3.1 Electronic communication policy Course instructor will reply to all student email within 24 hours, but not on weekends (unless in the case of an emergency). If you receive no reply within this time period, please resend your email. Please include the course number in the subject. This helps identify students faster and your email is less likely to be rejected as spam. Please avoid internet slang, such as LOL, or emoticons as these are unprofessional. 2 Course Details 2.1 Evaluation The breakdown of grades for the course this term is as follows. Group Assignments 30% Observation Journal 10% Final Review Essay 20% Test 1 20% Test 2 20% 2.2 Website Please use D2L for access to lecture slides, assignment instructions, course readings and other resources. 2.3 Readings and Viewing Material All readings and viewing material are available through the library Reserve List. Each lecture is accompanied by a set of required readings or short videos/films. The schedule can be found in the Reading List document on D2L. 2.4 University Policies The following sections are University Policies that apply to every undergraduate course at the University of and must appear on a syllabus. 2.4.1 Academic Integrity In order to maintain a culture of academic integrity, members of the University of Waterloo community are expected to promote honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. Check www.uwaterloo.ca/academicintegrity/ for more information. 2.4.2 Discipline A student is expected to know what constitutes academic integrity (check www.uwaterloo.ca/academicintegrity/) to avoid committing an academic offence, and to take responsibility for his/her actions. A student who is unsure whether an action constitutes an offence, or who needs help in learning how to avoid offences (e.g., plagiarism, cheating) or about \rules" for group work/collaboration should seek guidance from the course instructor, academic advisor, or the undergraduate Associate Dean. For information on categories of offences and types of penalties, students should refer to Policy 71, Student Discipline, www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infosec/Policies/policy71.htm. Note that all cases of academic misconduct -- even minor mistakes or apparently trivial cases -- must be reported to the appropriate academic dean. There are no exceptions to this rule! 2.4.3 Appeals A decision made or penalty imposed under Policy 70 (Student Petitions and Grievances) (other than a petition) or Policy 71 (Student Discipline) may be appealed if there is a ground. A student who believes he/she has a ground for an appeal should refer to Policy 72 (Student Appeals) www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infosec/Policies/policy72.htm. 2.4.4 Grievance A student who believes that a decision affecting some aspect of his/her university life has been unfair or unreasonable may have grounds for initiating a grievance. Read Policy 70, Student Petitions and Grievances, Section 4, www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infosec/Policies/policy70.htm. When in doubt please be certain to contact the department's administrative assistant who will provide further assistance. 2.4.5 Students with disabilities The Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD), located in Needles Hall, Room 1132, collaborates with all academic departments to arrange appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities without compromising the academic integrity of the curriculum. If you require academic accommodations to lessen the impact of your disability, please register with the OPD at the beginning of each academic term. Please contact the instructor as soon as possible if you require academic accommodations. 2.5 Course Policies The following policies are specific to this course. 2.5.1 Late assignments All assignments submitted late will be penalized 1% from your final overall grade per 24 hour period past the deadline, to a maximum of the assignment value. Consideration may be granted if you contact the instructor for an exception before the due date (see 2.5.6). 2.5.2 Groups vs Individual work For the group projects in this course effective collaboration and cooperation is expected. Groups will consist of two students. The grading for each group assignment will be split into two sections worth 2.5% each. One section will be marked by the instructor for content and fulfillment of the brief -- both group members will receive the same grade for this section. The second section will be marked by the group members. Each member will grade the other for participation and effort. A full rubric for both sections will be given out at the Introduction lecture. If there are any difficulties among the group members, don't wait to sort it out, contact the instructor and begin documenting any difficulties immediately. Typically, any individual adjustments will require considerable evidence and will only take place after all portions of the project have been submitted and graded. For individual assignments students are required to develop their own ideas, do their own research and write their own assignments. However, they are also encouraged to approach their colleagues, friends or family to discuss their ideas or for help proofreading assignment drafts. See section 3 for more information about the different kinds of assignments. 2.5.3 Regrading Grades for all assignments and tests can be appealed, using the following process: 1. First, after an assignment or test is returned, feel free to approach the instructor for help explaining the grade, but a 24-hour cooling off period is required before grades can be appealed or altered, with the exception of simple misunderstandings. 2. After the 24 hours has elapsed, students should discuss their assignment or test directly with the person who graded their work for more information about the grade or possible misunderstandings about expectations. 3. If still unsatisfied, a student should submit to the instructor a written justification explaining why the grade is inappropriate and how the student would address the marker's criticisms. 4. The instructor will re-grade the entire assignment or test. The new grade may be higher or lower than the original, and will be considered final. 2.5.4 Test conflicts Because this is a night course other instructors occasionally schedule tests during official class time. In case of such a conflict, the other instructor is obligated to provide alternate test arrangements for students with a conflict. Students are expected to notify their instructors of such conflicts as soon as possible. 2.5.5 Gender-fair language Gender-fair or gender-neutral language should be used for all assignments and tests. That is, don't use “man" to refer to “humans", and don't use “he" to refer to a person unless you know that person is male. You may be penalized for failing to use appropriate terms. To familiarize yourself with gender-fair language, see: http://www.rpi.edu/web/writingcenter/genderfair.html. 2.5.6 Exceptions and Extensions Student who are ill must make initial contact the instructor within 48 hours of a missed deadline, and in case of illness must supply a University of Waterloo Verification of Illness form within one week of a deadline. All exceptions to the course policies require documentation and, wherever possible, advance notice. Unplanned family emergencies and illnesses are generally good reasons for an exception; a heavy course load or a failure to plan ahead or allocate enough time to this course are never good reasons. 2.5.7 Excessive disruptions, mobile phones and portable computers Lectures are not the ideal time for talking loudly, playing games, emailing or checking up with friends on Facebook, or reading newspapers. Playing games or surfing the web can be very distracting for students around you, and noisily disrupting lectures in a way that affects others will not be tolerated. Also, all cell phones should be on mute, or preferably switched off. 2.5.8 Feedback I encourage course feedback at all times. Contact me directly or submit anonymous comments on D2L. I will attempt to address all concerns as soon as possible. Please note that the anonymous feedback box is truly anonymous and I can't reply to any comments left there. 3 Projects and Assignments 3.1 Observation Journal - 10% The purpose of the journal is for you to observe and comment on your everyday encounters with painting, poetry, photography, music, advertising, movies, fashion, design etc.. This provides an opportunity to apply and make connections among the ideas and concepts that you are learning in settings in a way directly relevant to your experience of the arts in society. You will need a notebook for journal entries or a binder into which they can be assembled. Any format will be accepted providing communication of your ideas and observations is clear to the viewer. Showing your journal to friends is valuable means to ensure communication of your ideas is at its strongest. The strongest journals tend to be done thoughtfully over a period of time. This enables you to develop your ideas and observations more deeply. The grading will be split into two sections; 5% will be awarded for participation. Along with the actual completion of your journal, the participation mark consists of a short class presentation (4 minutes maximum) on one specific observation you have made. This will take place in class on March 26 th. The Journals will not be checked throughout the term. This is to encourage you to develop your own methods to best examine your personal encounter with art and society. As with all aspects of the course, please ask for advice if you feel you need some guidance at any point. 5% will be awarded for content. As the course will illustrate, it is a difficult task to judge one’s experience of art. You will not be examined on the quality of any drawings, photographs, poetry/prose etc. you produce but rather your application of the course theories and concepts. To achieve a higher grade evidence of research/reading above and beyond the course material will be presented. 3.2 Six assignments will be given, worth 5% each. The grading of each assignment will be split into two 2.5% sections; the instructor will mark one section for overall content (worth 2.5%) and each member of the group will grade the other for participation. The assignments are designed to encourage you to respond to the course material, think critically, develop your own ideas and to work well in interdisciplinary groups. Some research will be required, although you will be given appropriate limitations and boundaries. In all cases, complete instructions and a rubric will be made available in class and on D2L. Total = 30% 3.3 Final Review Essay, 20% (Individual Assignment) Nylon Road by Parsua Bashi is available from the University Bookstore. Important lessons in this course are to always carefully consider the relationship between art and society. The graphic novel Nylon Road by Parsua Bashi is an autobiographical exploration of the artist’s life in Iran and cultural/self reflection since moving to Switzerland. Students will be expected to do significant background research in order to gain a full understanding of themes that arise in the novel; such as religion, Iranian politics, gender bias and the impact of art on one’s life. The graphic novel has become an increasingly popular art-form and some exploration of this medium will be expected as well. Full details of Group Assignments and the Review essay, including a rubric, will be given out at the Introduction lecture. 3.2 Notes for all assignments Group assignments will be completed during the last hour of each class and handed in at the end of class. A 1.5 – 2 page assignment is expected. The review essay will be handed in at the beginning of the last class. A word-count of 1800-2000 words, not including the bibliography, is expected. All submissions that fail to meet the assignment word count minimums will be penalized in proportion to the assignment expectations. For example, the essay is worth 20 marks, a submission of 900 words (50% of the minimum) will be penalized by 50%, or 10 marks. There may or may not be a penalty for exceeding the word count. The marker will expect that all attempts were made to eliminate unnecessary and redundant text, and if the marker feels that going over the word count was beneficial, no penalty will be assessed. If going over the word count does not contribute meaningfully to the text, an appropriate penalty may be applied. 4 Tests There will be two in-class midterm-type tests, worth 20% each. Each will be two hours. The tests partially non-accumulative with respect to each half of the course. That is, the first test deals exclusively with material covered during all the of the preceding lectures, and the second test deals almost exclusively with material from the second half of the course, but it is expected that students will still be familiar with broad coursewide concepts. 5 Tentative Schedule Each week will begin with a brief review of student’s progress and questions relating to the final review essay of Nylon Road and will conclude with group assignments during the last hour of class. Jan. 9th Welcome and Introduction; What is Art? and What is not Art? Jan. 16th Aesthetics – Judging taste and beauty in art – from Kant and Hume to modern perspectives; Making and breaking the rules – A brief history and exploration of censorship in the arts. Jan. 23rd Religion – Religious influence on the arts and artists. Exploring the differences between religious and spiritual art. Jan. 30th Politics – The Artist as Advocate; Sociology – the role of folk music in protest movements. Feb. 6th Canadian Native art and literature – a brief history and exploration of current artists today. Multi-culturalism – Is multi-culturalism at work in Canadian arts. Feb. 13th Essay review followed by Test 1 – 2 hour in-class (20%). Feb. 20th Reading Week Feb. 27th Art in Conflict – the poet in war; from World War One to Iraq. Art in Healing – An Exploration of Art Therapy. Mar. 5th Economics –the collector, the artist, the gallery and the government. Public Art – The Public Purse; does society have a role in public art? Mar. 12th Cultural Theory and the Influence of Technology; Technological Determinism or Social Constructivism:the impact of digital photography. Mar. 19th Eco-criticism – how green is the art footprint?; The artist’s awareness of landscape; an exploration of Andy Goldsworthy Mar. 26th Presentation of Observation Journal (10%); Final Review essay due at beginning of class (20%) Apr. 2nd Test 2 (20%) 5.1 Final grades Final grades submitted to the Registrar will not curved or modified in any way, although they will be rounded to whole integers using a round-half-to-even method. This is statistically fair but perhaps not what all students are used to.
