The Underground Railroad Experience: Moses Grandy Slave Narrative, Great Dismal Swamp & Hampton Roads Historic Sites Diversity Restoration Solutions, Inc. (DRS) invites you to join us for a new day trip called “The Underground Railroad Experience: Moses Grandy Slave Narrative, Great Dismal Swamp & Hampton Roads Historic Sites.” Travel with us throughout Hampton Roads and Northeastern North Carolina for a history learning experience to key points along the Underground Railroad (UGRR). Points of interest will be places named in the famed Moses Grandy 1843 slave narrative and the Federal Writers' Project slave narrative of Charles Grandy. When: March 22- April 12- May 24, 2014 Time: 8:30AM – 5:00PM Tour will start & end at the Dismal Swamp State Park & Visitors Center in South Mills (NC Highway Route 17 – Camden County) *Bus Pickups: Broken Egg Bistro – Suffolk (7:30am) (5860 Harbour View Blvd, Suffolk VA 23435) Wal-Mart – Grassfield (8:00am) (Dominion Blvd – Chesapeake/Deep Creek) Start the day at the Dismal Swamp State Park in South Mills, NC for an exhibit tour and presentation, including Moses Grandy’s slave narrative and the history of the 208-year-old Dismal Swamp Canal. The canal was predominantly hand dug by enslaved labor and was officially designated as UGRR site in 2004 by the National Park Service. Next journey down the Moses Grandy Trail through the Deep Creek area to the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail to Fort Monroe, formerly known as Old Point Comfort, for a tour presentation about Civil War escaped slaves known as the “Contraband” and, Charles Grandy. Grandy was a Fortress Monroe former slave turned cook and Union Army guard. We then enjoy a delicious mid-day lunch.
