Birner DAAD scholarship programme Objectives To contribute to human capacity building and strengthening of academic teaching and research in tropical and subtropical countries by providing the opportunity to acquire the “Dr. sc. agr.” degree (Ph.D.). The specific objectives are to train outstanding persons from Africa, Asia and Latin America in research, academic teaching, international policy and in institutional management and to prepare them for leading positions in their home countries. This part of the programme aims to offer alumni a continuous cooperation after their PhD and to publish in co-operation with Hohenheim staff. In the years 2007 to 2010 28 alumni made use of this with the result of publication of 8 books and 12 reviewed articles in Journals and books. The costs have been covered mainly by DAAD but also by other institutions like Humboldt Foundation.
