Message from the Headmaster
This week saw our school focus on Fairtrade fortnight, allowing and encouraging our pupils
to reflect on the big impact they can have on the world by carrying out the relatively small act
of buying Fairtrade products. When faced with such huge global issues, we often assume
that our own actions will be insignificant, but it is important to remind our young people that
they can and should be the force of change they wish to see in the world. Our inter
connectedness is staggering and we all stopped this week to consider the people who grow
the food we eat and the lives they lead. As Martin Luther King famously quoted, ‘before you
have finished breakfast, you have depended on over half of the world.’
On Wednesday, our Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils enjoyed Global Development Day, exploring this
concept further and understanding how difficult life can be for millions of people around the
world. Mrs Benham’s tutor group summarised this brilliantly for us in assembly this morning
and we were all able to enjoy the fabulous photographs of our Year 9 pupils surviving in the
wild for a day and experiencing the conditions that are faced by millions of people on a daily
basis.
My huge thanks to all of you who came to join me for afternoon tea and a delicious slice (or
two) of cake on Thursday. It is always wonderful to be able to spend time with you all and to
listen to your thoughts, ideas and comments. I am conscious that I didn’t manage to speak to
all of you during that time and my apologies for not being able to get around to see you all.
Please feel free to make an appointment to come and see me if there is anything at all that
you would like to share with me. I really do value your support enormously.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Year Four sound great!
Year 4 concluded their science topic on sound by making their own musical instruments!
They enjoyed creating different sounds using rubber bands, rice and other materials!
Year Four Science
Year 4 have started a new unit in science on states of matter. We had much debate on what
constitutes a solid, liquid and gas! Butter and Jelly created a lot of discussion and some
disagreement! We ended our lesson by sorting out given properties into different groups of
either solid, liquid or gas. An eye opening lesson for Year 4!
Year Six Priest’s House Trip
On Wednesday morning, Year 6 students had the opportunity to visit the Priest’s House
Museum in Wimborne as an extension of this term’s History topic: The Reign of Queen
Victoria. Students took it in turns to work in the Victorian kitchen, making Mrs Beeton’s plain
biscuits and still lemonade. They also visited the Victorian Ironmonger’s shop and
the Stationer and Tobacconist’s shop where they did some stock taking, learnt about
Victorian money and found out the sort of jobs a child would be expected to do. Feedback
from the students was very positive:
Rohan said "I loved crushing the sugar and squeezing the lemons. Our lemonade tasted
delicious!"
Sam said "The quiz was really fun because you had to find out how many objects were in
the shop. I found 7!"
James said "The washing part was my favourite because we got to spin the clothes around
and had to grate this disgusting-smelling soap! Life was hard in those days! I wouldn't like to
live in the Victorian Times!"
Many thanks to Mr. Barbur and Mr. Legg who accompanied the visit.

Year Seven have been studying ‘Pi’
To celebrate Pi Day on March 14th, Year 7 have been finding out facts to do with pi.
Pi is written as π and is the 16th letter in the Greek alphabet. The symbol has been used in
its mathematical sense only for the past 250 years
π is the ratio of the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter. Mathematicians from
many ancient cultures were aware that this value was always the same, no matter how big
the circle.
π is a constant and is approximately 3.14159. It is an irrational number which means that it
can’t be written exactly as a fraction or a decimal. It is also transcendental, ie:- it is not a
root of a non-zero polynomial equation with integer coefficients.
Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th as in America they would write this date as 3/14, the
same as the first 3 digits of π.
Pi Day is also Albert Einstein’s birthday.
Challenge: Can you crack the mathematical code below?
Thank You!
Year 7 and 8 students did a great job of baking some delicious cookies and
cakes with Fairtrade ingredients to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight (27th
February - 12th March).
These were enjoyed, with a cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee, at the end of our
Global Development Day on Tuesday.
More details of the activities that the students participated in will follow in next week’s
newsletter.
Senior R.E.
Wow! I have been so impressed with the effort, imagination and very high standard of work
that Years 7, 8 and 9 have put into their recent R.E. project work. All three year groups were
given three weeks to plan and produce a 3D item of their choice, and support it with written
work. Year 7’s project was based on Parables, Year 8’s on Judaism/Anne Frank and Year
9’s was on Buddhism.
I hope you enjoy looking at some of these below. Projects deserving a particularly special
mention are Alice and Chloe in Year 7, Caitlin, Jamie and Amber in Year 8 and Raife, Suzie
and Ben in Year 9. Ben produced a fabulous stop motion film about Moses. I thoroughly
recommend you ask him to show you it if you get the opportunity as the attention to detail
and quality of production is very impressive.
I truly am astounded by the work that has clearly been put into so many of these projects
and want to say a big thank you to all the parents who have supported their children in
creating them. Thank you for numerous trips to hobby craft, parents spending very late
nights assisting with filming and lighting, and generally taking a very much appreciated
interest in the project work.

Year 11 Photography
The Year 11 Photography GCSE students were given two past exam papers to choose a
topic from for their mock exams. Here are some of the results.
Joe chose the theme ‘I, Me, Mine’.
The Clayesmore Cross Country Relay Race
We recently took four teams of runners to compete in the Clayesmore Cross Country Relay
Race. This race is completed as a team of four, each having to run the 1.5mile course before
the next runner can start.
We had pupils running in the Year 5&6 and Year 7&8 boys and girls events.
Most of our runners raced well and performed to the best of their ability over the very wet
and muddy course, but some athletes found it more of a challenge.
All of our pupils enjoyed the afternoon and were excited to participate.
We will be looking for pupils to take part again next year, so keep training everyone.
Match Report
Y6/5 Rugby vs Lee Hurst Swan & Talbot House Schools onWednesday 8th March 2017

On a drizzly, damp afternoon the U11 rugby team entertained teams from Leehurst Swan
and Talbot House in a thoroughly entertaining mini tournament. The opening match against
Talbot House was a classic with great running rugby and resilient defence from both teams.
Anthony continued his fine start to the season with a very well taken try, following some
typically robust work in midfield from Jack. Talbot House hit back with two tries of their own,
only for Sam to score a fine try in the corner to bring the scores level. With time running out
for both teams, it was Talbot House who managed to conjure up a winning try, to bring a
thoroughly competitive and entertaining match to an end.
The second match against Leehurst Swan B was another tense encounter with both teams
defending brilliantly. Try scoring opportunities were kept to a minimum, but great work from
Archie and Rohan nearly created the opening that Moyles Court were craving. Eventually
LHS found a way through the Moyles Court defence and scored the only try of the game to
sneak a fine win.
In the final game, Moyles Court competed valiantly against LHS A team, making them work
hard for their opportunities. Finlay was having a great game in his first outing for the team
and despite losing by three tries to nil, the performance was a very pleasing one.
Man-of-the-Match
Jack, for his persistence and great ball carrying skills that created plenty of try scoring
opportunities.
Open Morning
It was wonderful to see so many of our parents at our Open Morning on Saturday. It was a
very successful morning. Our Alice in Wonderland themed tea party went down a storm!
Thank you very much to the PTA and our wonderful parents for helping and for talking to
prospective parents.
Where are they now?
Following our ‘Shout Out’ on Facebook regarding ‘Old Courtians’, we have had some lovely
letters. Here is a particularly lovely one from Fiona Donovan:
Having seen your request on Facebook, I thought I would drop you a line.
My name, when at MC, was Fiona Charlesworth. Sept 1977 - July 1980.
I have, for the past 10 years, been working for the Kingfisher Group (B&Q, Screwfix owners)
as a Programme Analyst/Junior Project Manager in the IT function. In addition to my work
tasks, I am also Chair of the Employee Representative Committee, have just completed 5
years as Chair of the Kingfisher European Works Council and am also Chair of our Social
team organising events for staff and their partners.
I live in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire and still have a connection with Ringwood as my mother
lives there. I completed my school education at Ringwood Comprehensive where I was very
good friends with one of your former staff members, Ally Langdown. Also, another friend's
two grandchildren joined your number in September 2016 - Joseph & Charlie.
It is so good to know that the school is doing so well as it formed a very happy and important
part of my formative years and I look back on that time with great fondness.
With kindest regards
Fiona Donovan

Boarders’ News
The boarders had an action packed weekend, which kicked off with them all taking part in
the schools open morning. They all helped with guiding prospective parents around and
were fabulous role models. In the afternoon, Miss D and Miss Rosie took the boarders for a
"muddy and wet" walk in the forest. It was certainly wet and most definitely muddy, but that
added to the fun.
Following on from the wide range of activities that all of the boarders participate in, we have
introduced a "Certificate of Appreciation". This is awarded to any boarder who shows that
they are working hard at Being healthy, Being careful with their money, Enjoying themselves
and Staying positive and safe. We are pleased to announce that this week, the award was
given to Aidan, Charlotte and Bradley. Well done.
On Sunday, the boarders enjoyed a day in Portsmouth. Many spent the day shopping, but
some of the braver boarders went up the Spinnaker Tower and took in the fabulous views.
