Scholarship Information Through the department’s fundraising efforts and the generous donations of others and the support of the Friends of SKPR, the department is pleased to offer a scholarship program for South Kingstown youth. Scholarships are available for individuals who qualify for the South Kingstown School Department’s free and reduced lunch program. Application forms are available at the Neighborhood Guild. Please note; applications must be received no later than 10 business days before the start of the camp/program. Aquatic Adventures Skim Board Camp Join in the fun as you learn to skim board for the first time or improve on skills you already know. The South Kingstown Town Beach in Matunuck offers great shoreline skimming and great conditions for long and fast rides. The camp will focus on the fundamental skills involved in skim-boarding and basic ocean knowledge. Once the basics are mastered, you will have an opportunity to learn some new tricks or master skills with top East Coast skim board professional Drew Bruno and his staff. Open to ages 10 – adult. Camp meets at the South Kingstown Town Beach and uses Matunuck Point Surf Break. Wetsuits, surfboards, and instructors provided. Learn everything you need to know to rip up waves from certified ESA and NSSIA instructors. Activities include concentrated instruction on paddling techniques, proper board stance, how to catch and ride waves and how to paddle through white water. There will also be beach instruction on rip tides and currents. A FUN surfing competition will take place the last day of camp and prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Competition divisions are based on ability levels and ages. Open to youth ages 10 through adult (8 and 9 years old with permission from the instructor). Participants MUST be strong swimmers, able to maneuver over rocky terrain and handle their own board both in the water and on land. Fee includes all rental equipment, including a surfboard, leash, wetsuit, and wetsuit boots. Campers are welcome to bring their own equipment if they prefer. Participants should bring a snack, lunch, 2-3 water bottles, 2 towels and sunscreen. This program is held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, a program cancellation decision will be made at 8:30am. Make up day for any cancellation is the Friday after the last day of camp. Camp starts Monday June 26 and runs through September 1 with individual weeks for your convenience. This year everyone will be located at Tuckertown Park where there’s tons of fun stuff to do! We have basketball & tennis courts, walking trails, a full playground, baseball and soccer fields and a covered pavilion for other activities. You’ll have time everyday to pick activities to do with your friends. Many of our staff will be coming back this summer and they’re looking forward to seeing you! We’re already working on new games, trips, craft projects and more. A few important things parents need to know: *Weeks 1 through 9: at Tuckertown Park (TTP) -camp activity calendar will be available June 1st at the Guild and on the town website. -rain location is the Neighborhood Guild. *Week 10 Aug 28 – Sept 1: at the Neighborhood Guild -camp activity calendar for this week will be available Aug 1 *Age groups are 6-8 and 9-12: Groups will be located in 2 different areas of the park however they will participate in some group activities and field trips together. The drop off and pick up location will be the same for everyone at TTP. *Regular Day hours are 8:00a.m. – 3:00p.m. The cost per week is $85R / $95 NR *Extended Day hours are 8:00a.m. – 5:30p.m. The cost per week is $110 resident / $120 NR -children registered for extended day are transported to the Neighborhood Guild by bus where you will pick them up. *Field trips and certain special activities are NOT included in the registration fee. You will need to refer to the camp calendar for details. *NEW this year is Early Morning Drop off: Starting at 7:30 a.m. children can be dropped off but pre-registration will be required. When registering for camp, this will be an option for you. The cost is $3 per day / $15 per week. This is for any child dropped off prior to 8:00 a.m. *Late pickups: A $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes a child is not picked up (please refer to camp guidelines for details.) *Camp activity calendar will be available June 1st at the Guild and on the town website *There is no camp on July 4 or August 14 due to the holidays. *NEW this year: Staff Meet & Greet at the NEW Rec Center on Tuesday, June 13 and Thursday June 15 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for you to pre-register for field trips, drop off medical forms and pick up trip shirts for your child. Bring the kids and they can play a game or two with some staff while you complete the paperwork. -Note: field trip space will be limited and therefore we do encourage you to register in advance. *NEW this year: Children not attending field trips will be able to stay at camp with staff at TTP. School bus safety, stranger danger, home, fire and general safety topics are highlighted during the four-day session. The children will meet real first responders, explore some safety vehicles, and take a field trip to the SK Police Department. Please pack a small nut-free snack and a drink each day. Dance Camp Do you hear that sound? Does music get you out of your seat and moving your feet? Then let’s dance! Get those dance shoes on your feet as we move to the beat! Each day will be packed with cool dance moves and lots of creativity. Learn the dances all week and we will put on a show on Friday for family and friends. We will create a camp t-shirt to wear on our final day along with other dance related crafts. All campers must bring energy packed snacks, a lunch and plenty of water. Groups take a hay ride down to Narrow River where campers enjoy a supervised swim. Every day they help feed and care for a different farm animal. We will set personal weeklong goals and work towards meeting them. You will learn the fundamentals and work on a variety of skills and maneuvers that will challenge you as a skater. There will be plenty of time to practice under the expert guidance of instructor Evan Mansolillo who has been skating since he was 10 years old and has participated in and won many local, regional and national competitions, including our very own SK Skate Competition! Designed to introduce the basic skills and fundamentals of skateboarding, including skate park etiquette, skateboarding games, and maneuvers. The day is broken into both group and one-on-one instructional sessions and always ends in a free skate where parents are welcome to come and view their child’s progress. The Challenger coaching staff provides lessons in self-discipline, good sportsmanship, respect for others and for the game. Each participant will receive 12 hours of instruction Come and learn all about track and field! Lots of techniques will be reviewed including block starts, long jump, hurdles and shot put.
