Background
You are working as a mid-weight graphic
designer for MO’Shani&Co. They believe in
solid concepts being the foundation of any
successful design and push their designers to
achieve their designs through ideas not style.
They even have a sign above the studio front
doors that says ‘Please leave your style here,
it will be waiting for you when you get back’.
Mo’Shani1 has landed a new advertising
opportunity with Australian bag manufacturer,
Crumpler2. The client is requesting a pitch for
a print campaign and you will be responsible
for delivering the initial ideas.
Client
Crumpler is renowned for creating products
that meet the demands of their users while
maintaining a uniquely identifiable style.
Started in 1992 by Stuart Crumpler, an
inventive bike courier, who was trying to
forge the perfect bag for use on his bicycle.
Crumpler got serious in 1995 when Dave
Roper and Will Miller (ex bike couriers &
founders of Minuteman Messengers) joined
and they decided to commercially release the
custom made bags. This first release quickly
gained cult status and in 2000 Siegfried Elgert
and Jörg Bodenschatz also joined and took the
brand to the United States and Europe where
they have continued to thrive in popularity.
They are a brand that has a unique Australian
sense of humour - recently holding a no cash
week where their stores would only accept
beer as the method of payment – they are
not afraid to make fun of themselves or for
their customers.
Brief
The brief from the client is to help them
launch a range of bum-bags through an
advertsisng campaign. Sensing resurgence in
the popularity of this once popular bag, the
bum-bag, they’re aiming to capture the 18 to
25 year student audience by advertising their
new range of ‘hip-packs.’
Deliverables
You need to submit a record of your process
for generating your single-minded proposition
that demonstrates your use of research,
ideation, critical thinking, and when to censor
and inhibit.
For this brief you need to consider the client’s
needs and distil down the brief to a singleminded proposition (SMP) to present back
to the client. The whole campaign will rely
heavily on this single-minded proposition,
so it’s important to record the process of
extracting this key insight.
You need to present your single-minded
proposition as a multi-page (at least 10) A4
landscape PDF document including words and
pictures that accurately describes your creative
process and presents the final idea. You do
not need to present the finished advertisements
at this stage but you could present rough
concepts and ideas that could be developed
into final pieces.
You’ll need to keep a record of the process
you’ve been through, the alternatives you’ve
explored and why other approaches have been
abandoned in favour of the chosen SMP. This
should be presented as one thought process
that leads you to the final idea.
This is the presentation the account managers
will take into the client meeting so it needs
to look professional. They will add in the
Mo’Shahani slides (costs and timelines)
themselves. Your presentation should include a
number of slides that include:
As part of this you will also need to raise any
areas that could have a potential backlash
(good or bad) and make the client aware
of legalities or ethical constraints they may
need to tackle if they decide to go with your
idea. Typically in advertising someone always
complains about something (too sexual, too
lewd, too nationalistic etc.) – review your
work and see if anyone could have cause for
complaint. It’s better to let the client know
now so they can make an informed decision.
1. Introduction page – this should restate the
‘problem’ that needs to be solved.
2. Target market research – what does the 18
to 25 student want.
3. Product research – history of the bum-bag,
the rise and fall.
4. The creative process you took – what has
merit and what isn’t working.
5. The USP – what makes the hip-pack unique
The SMP – what is the ONE key benefit or
feature or implied benefit that the hip pack
has. This is the core idea that you will focus
your concepts on
6. Possible tag lines or slogans.
7. Possible routes that could be taken – rough
hand-rendered concepts that showdepth of
application of the campaign
8. The rationale – why is this the right
approach for Crumpler to take.
9. Any potential hazards – legal and ethical –
that could cause controversy.
To do list:
¨
¨
Research target market and product.
¨
Present your single-minded proposition
as a multi-page (at least 10) A4
landscape PDF document containing all
of the parts above.
¨
Include images to help visually support
your process.
¨
Save the document as a low res PDF
ready for the client to view.
¨
Submit for feedback
Use brainstorming, mind-mapping and
other ideation techniques to develop
your single-minded proposition.
