Global REV 6 1.25.12

Current Definition of Global Palatant Requirements
Pet food companies wanting to go global have to first realize the constraints of
other countries’ regulatory requirements. This document summarizes the global
palatant requirements based on country, protein source, and process criteria. The
document also provides certain geographic alternatives based on specific protein
and process combinations.
Key findings within this document are:
1) A truly global palatant is limited to single-celled proteins, non-GMO vegetable
proteins, or fish harvested/processed in the US.
2) A truly global palatant has a minimum 30 minute heat treatment at 90o Celsius
(non-salmonid fish) and may not contain STPP.
3) Palatants for the Western Hemisphere must be heat treated at 90o Celsius for
30 minutes, contain no specified risk materials (per EC 1069/2009), and have
appropriate registrations and permits.
4) For Europe, all conditions in item three must be met along with the use of
non-GMO raw materials and compliance with EC 1069/2009.
The current global regulatory requirements for palatant products are outlined in
Tables A, B, and C below.
