LYRIC WRITING: Assist your child in creating a rap song using different examples from home. This activity will strengthen concepts of rhyming and rhythmic awareness. Materials: - Blank index cards - Pencil and crayons Activity: Help your child identify a funny story or a memory from real life. Then, encourage him to write a short story with a funny ending, made up words, and lots of details to tell. Make it as silly and crazy as you can to generate enthusiasm. Then, identify “key words” that will help with the rhyming pattern. Next, establish the beat that will accompany the rap or story (e.g., da DUM da da DUM da da DUM da DUM). Take it Further: Rapping can be used to promote many ideas or make listening to music more interesting. Help define the role powerful words have in conveying a message. Then, encourage your child to write a short story for performance. Scholastic and logos are registered trademarks of Scholastic Inc. © Scholastic Entertainment Inc. 2012 All Rights Reserved
