Yan Oi Tong Mighty Rovers Arctic Expedition 2011 Study Project : The coastal geomorphology in Arctic (中譯: 看!那未被冰封的海岸地貌。) Yuko Wong Suet Mei DMHC Siu Ming Secondary School Rico Yau Man Ho YOT Chan Wong Suk Fong Mem Secondary School Purpose of the Project : •To understand how the Arctic coastal landscape looks like. •To understand how the landscape has been formed over many years. •To understand how the formations of Arctic coastal landscape differ from those in Hong Kong. Hypothesis: Factors affecting the formation of coastal landscape in Arctic are similar to those in Hong Kong which include : • Wave erosion • Deposition Hong Kong coastal landscape Methodology • Identify and record the landform features found in the eastern coast of Greenland. (Recorded by photographing and jotting notes) • Observe the features, see whether there are some evidences which may probably contribute to its formation. • Deduce how they formed from the clues/evidences. • Draw diagrams to show the forming processes. Methodology the features found in different spots : Feature Fjord Spit Bar V V Beach Delta Lagoon Spot Sea cave Headland V V Longyearbyan V V 14th July Glacier V Magdalenafjorden V Frederylcsal V Sydkap V V V Jyttesham V V V Rypefjord V V Hekla Harm V V Hurry Inlet V V V V V V V V V V Factors related to the formation of coastal landscape in Arctic deposition Wave erosion Glacial movement Tectonic action Features formed by : wave erosion wave deposition Sea cave Rocky beach •14th July Glacier • Sydkap Features formed by: glacial movement moraine • Rypefjord tectonic activities More resistant metamorphic rock •Hekla Harm Findings: • Sea wave erosion serves only a side factor and only one landform feature recorded is related to sea wave erosion. • There are many other factors leading to the presence of the mentioned coastal landform features, like the glacial movement and tectonic action, etc. • Generally, there is no coastal landscape resulted from glacial movement in Hong Kong, but Arctic does.
