THE main activity, Mexico is a fair
— a display of a multitude of
colorful, handmade artifacts.
One of the most beautiful and
traditional is the loom-woven serape. Serapes are used as blankets,
rugs, wall-hangings, table covers.
Sometimes, a slit is left in the center, making the serape into a poncho.
No two serapes are identical,
even if mad e by the same man.
The whole process, from shearing
the sheep, through carding, spinning, dyeing and weavin g, involves
expertise and artistry. The variety
of serapes is almost unbelievable .
The wool mav be as coarse as a
horse blanket, as soft a"H Hu nt as
cashmere,
as thick and finel y
combed as an elegant rug. It may
be pure white or a rainbow of
van-colored stripes. The design
may be floral, abstract, or pictorl.dly detailed .
