Online Connections home page Regional Sources and Stories Department Martin County, Burial Plots at Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center Judith Q. McMullen The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division was established in 1941, during World War II, to act as a principal source of production, testing, and storage for all ammunition. Renamed Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center in 1992, the division now concentrates on research, development, and testing of high-tech weapons. It is the “third-largest Navy base in the world and the only Department of Defense base left in Indiana.”1 The Crane Division is in northern Martin County on a 97.8-square-mile site that was once Baker, Brown, and McCameron townships. According to “Crane’s Burial Plots,” printed by the Crane Division on April 24, 2001, there are twenty-eight cemeteries on the division’s grounds, some with numerous graves and some with just a few. The sixty-page list gives names, birth and death dates, cemeteries, veteran status, and other information. There are also maps of twenty-two of the cemeteries, showing the location of the cemeteries and the number and placement of the graves within the cemeteries. An additional map shows the locations of all of the cemeteries in Crane Division. The largest cemetery at Crane, with close to five hundred grave sites, is Salem Cemetery. According to Churches of Martin County, Indiana, Salem Baptist Church, in McCameron Township, was located at the “site of the Administration Building of the Naval Ammunition Depot.” Another church displaced by the government’s land purchases was Union Missionary Baptist Church, organized in McCameron Township on July 6, 1867. It had more than three hundred members before the building and grounds were purchased to develop the depot. There is also a West Union Cemetery at Crane, which has 370 grave sites.2 Military officials decided to leave the cemeteries “undisturbed” and to allow relatives to visit the grave sites of their ancestors on special occasions.3 “Due to increased security conditions,” on Memorial Day 2003 cemetery visitors were allowed on the grounds for a fivehour period only.4 Martin County, Burial Plots at Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center Portions of the list below were excerpted in a 13-part series in THG: Connections between winter 2003 and winter 2006. While only those whom the list clearly shows as having died in 1929 or before are listed here, a copy of the complete list of burials has been donated to the IHS library. For more information about the list or cemetery visitations, contact the Crane Division Public Affairs Office at 812-854-1495 or visit the Web site at http://www.crane.navy.mil/. Notes 1.
