Love Language Spring 2016

German Christmas market trip
On Wednesday 18th
November, our German class went to
the German markets. Everybody was
given a cheese sandwich, a bottle of water and a cake,
which we ate as we
walked down to the market. We chatted about our lives and
families and before we knew it we arrived in town. We arranged a meeting place then we went round all the different
stalls. Everybody brought
different things likes cookies,
doughnuts, Nutella and even
glass objects. Then we walked
back to school and show off
all our German stuff.

Speaking competition
On March 1st Mrs Donovan took four girls to Royal High School in Bath to take part in
a speaking competition run by routes into Languages. There were loads of students
from schools all over the South West. We listened to all the other contestants. We all
did presentations on topics such as my family, my town or a holiday. I managed to
knock over the display of prizes during my presentation. The judges seemed to find it
very funny though, and I managed to win my category. I came back with a lovely winners cup. I will be taking part in the South West final in June. The girls who took part
were Mon Ly Rosen (Russian), Lucia Adams (Spanish), Salma Hashim (French) and
Miala de Burca (German).
The Snow Maiden is a story about
a snow princess who leaves her father to explore the outside world.
There is also another girl who falls
in love with a prince. They are due
to be married but the prince falls in
love with the snow princess. They
are happy together but the love
causes the snow princess’ heart to
melt and causing her to die. In his
grief the prince commits suicide.
I enjoyed the ballet and thought
the costumes and dancing were
beautiful, however, it was quite a
sad storyline that some people
found hard to follow. However, I
would definitely watch and enjoy
it again, even though it was sad.

Language Perfect Competition results from Mme Moissan
Earlier this year, students across the school were given free access to the language learning programme Language Perfect. A competition for the person
to achieve the most points took place. Congratulations to Danlei Zhu for winning the overall competition with an amazingly high score and also to runners
up Nour Tazaoui, Aimee Barrow, Maïda Mukit and Fiona Chung.
We very much enjoyed getting to view the
Roman Baths. It was very informative and
it was a great day that we all enjoyed. We
were able to learn more about the sort of
lives the people we are researching led so
we could better understand what they
went through in a normal day. We also got
to see artefacts that the Romans would
have used and how they used it in their
everyday lives.
We learnt that at the baths there were
certain rituals that took place in order to
cleanse the skin such as opening their
pores with hot water and then covering
their skin in oil to trap the dirt. We also
learnt that an altar was there in order to
pray towards their chosen god, such as
Minerva who was the goddess of wisdom.
There were many statues of these gods
and tombstones of the priests who worshipped there.

Salve,
I have enjoyed the trip overall. During
the trip to the Roman baths, I have
learnt more about the layout of a Roman
bath. There was a warm room called the
Tepidarium, a hot room called Caldarium where slaves would rub perfumed oil
and would then scrape it of with a knife
called a strigil and lastly there was a big
cold bath called the Frigidarium to
swim in.

This year, we’ve been really lucky to get lots of specialist support in MFL and
if you haven't already met our fantastic team we’d like to introduce a few of
them to you now:
My name is Annabel, and this is my first year as a Language Ambassador, and I’m really enjoying it! I’ve taught
languages before when I volunteered in Columbia a few
years ago, but teaching in an English school is a very different experience. I’m currently studying Spanish and
French at Bristol University, and I’m now in my 4th year
and final year, and I’ll be really sad to leave this city!
My name’s Floss and I’m a Languages Ambassador from the University of Bristol. I study Spanish and Italian, and I come to help in Spanish
classes. I love my degree because I get to travel
loads! This year I’m off to teach in Costa Rica
and then the south of Italy!
I’m Tejen and I am currently studying Russian and
Spanish at the University of Bristol. I have been
studying Spanish for four years and Russian for
over ten. I spent several months living in Bogotá
and St Petersburg last year where I really developed my language skills. I really enjoy teaching
Russian and hope that I can make a valuable contribution here at Colston’s Girls’ School.
My name is Paul and I come from Antibes, on the
French Riviera. I am doing an exchange programme for
the academic year, working as a language assistant at the
University of Bristol. I also volunteer at Colston’s Girls’
School, which is a very different, albeit equally interesting, teaching experience. I am glad that I had the opportunity to come to this lovely city and I will cherish the
memories of all the good moments spent with students,
colleagues and those new friends I met in England.
My name is Becky and I study French and German at the
University of Bristol. I've always loved studying languages
and I think they offer a great insight into other cultures.
Languages open many doors and provide a multitude of
new opportunities that other subjects can't! I currently
support students in German in the school.
Hi I am Giuliana and I am
from Glasgow. I am studying
German and Italian at the
University of Bristol. Through
learning languages I have
been able to learn about languages, history and also literature. I currently help out in
German lessons and run an
after-school Italian club. I am
excited about my year
abroad next year!
My name is Ella and I am very excited to be a
Languages Assistant at CGS. After having just
returned from volunteering in Ghana, where I
taught English to young children, I am now using my language skills to teach French and a bit
of Spanish. Having a mother who teaches languages meant that I was surrounded by them
as a child and so I am enjoying passing on that
enthusiasm for languages! I will be
helping out until the
end of the year until
I head off travelling
again to Europe in
the summer, to
speak more languages!
In December, Senor Martin invited the Year 11 Spanish
classes to make churros! Churros are a typical Spanish
dessert; they are like thin donuts covered in cinnamon
sugar. We got to spend an exciting evening creating
delicious sugary snacks. It was very easy to make and
soon we were eagerly frying the
batter. We then got to coat them in
tasty cinnamon sugar. It was really
fun and everyone enjoyed all the
cooking! And we had lots of amazing churros to take home with to
eat with our family.

Competition news
Congratulations to the 3 year 9 girls (Isobel Singleton-Stokes, Lavinia MorrisonRiley and Liliana Sapienza) who got through to the MFL speaking competition at
GCHQ for their excellent and entertaining presentation on Sochi and the Winter
Olympics. They are among a handful of students chosen across the country - so
this is a fantastic achievement!
