MATH 111 TEST #1 REVIEW Sections: 1.1,-1.5; 2.1-2.7 1. I strongly encourage you to practice working problems out on paper as you would on the test. Simply entering answers into WebAssign is not the same review experience. 2. Some suggested problems to help you review in Chapter 1: Chapter One Review in the book pp. 148-150: 1-34, 37, 38, 41-42, 47, 48, 51-54, 57, 58, 75, 77 3. Some suggested problems to help you review in Chapter 2: Chapter Two Review in the book pp. 253-256: 1-15, 17, 18, 21, 22, 25-28, 31-34, 37-52, 55, 57, 60-67, 70-79, 86-91, 96-98, 100-103 4. The answers to the even and the odd problems for Chapter Reviews and Chapter Tests are in the back of your textbook so that you can easily check your answers. You should also have the e-book through WebAssign if you didn’t get the paper textbook. 5. Be aware that the calculator is only used as a checking tool and for regression. You may use it to do simple calculations for you, but you must show your algebra and what you are putting into your calculator on your paper in order to receive credit for your work. 6. There are also practice tests at the end of each chapter. These are shorter and provide more problems for you to work. All answers are in the back of the book. It would be good experience to sit down and try to take these as though you were taking a test and then check your work. 7. There is also a “Test Prep” section at the end of each chapter. This is an excellent summary of the topics we have studied. I recommend reviewing these pages and making notes of the things you may need to memorize such as: 4 methods to solve quadratic equations (zero product principle, square root property, completing the square, quadratic formula) Finding the domain of functions Methods for solving absolute value equations, radical equations, equations with rational exponents Solving inequalities and writing interval notation for solutions (including the critical value methods) Distance and Midpoint Formula Equations of Circles and Parabolas (standard and general forms…how to get standard form) Graphing of functions, circles, lines and parabolas; maximum and minimum values How to identify a function Evaluate functions Find zeros of a function Equations of lines, (find slope, parallel and perpendicular lines, etc.) Symmetry tests and transformation rules Combining Functions and their new domains (add, subtract, multiply, divide and compose functions) Perform and use linear and quadratic regression (the handout of regression steps will be allowed during the test)
