Corridor-wide Improvements: PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Lighting
Near-term. Implement easy improvements to existing auto
lights (e.g., increase wattage) and work with businesses to
install lighting on storefronts.
Medium-term. Retrofit existing auto lights with pedestrian
lights and add new pedestrian only lights in between (about
every 30-40 ft)
What is your highest priority for PEDESTRIAN SAFETY?
Curb extensions
Pedestrian-scale lighting
More-prominent crosswalks
Raised crossings
Which location is most important to you
for pedestrian safety?
Strategic curb extensions
Extending the curb at strategic
locations—intersections or highvolume crossings—will extend
pedestrians’ views or cars and
drivers’ views of pedestrians
What other comments do you have about
the proposed improvements?
More-prominent cues: highvisibility crosswalks, more
countdown signals, raised
crossings at strategic locations
Countdown signals, high-visibility
crosswalks, and raised crossings
improve pedestrian safety and make it
easier for people to cross the street
MISSION SOUTH OF CHAVEZ NEIGHBORHOOD TRANSPORTATION STUDY
Corridor-wide Improvements: STREETSCAPE ENVIRONMENT
What is your highest priority for STREETSCAPE ENVIRONMENT?
Additional plantings
Identify locations where
additional plantings will help to
fill in the greenery. Providing
landscaping around edges of
parking lot also improves
streetscape and gives definition
to the sidewalk.
Landscaped curb extensions
Additional plantings
Landscaped curb extensions
New signposts
Decorate controller boxes
Street Furniture
Landscaped curb extensions can help to narrow the street by
providing a green-edged buffer to existing open expanses.
Which location is most important to you
for streetscape improvements?
New signposts
Different signposts can offer more opportunities for
consolidating existing signage. This should help to de-clutter the
streets, and increase connectivity with destinations nearby.
What other comments do you have about
the proposed improvements?
Decorate signal control boxes
Some neighborhoods chose to decorate signal control boxes to camouflage
or beautify them. This can be done throughout the corridor or at specific
locations, and could be a community project.
Street Furniture
Identify locations for street furniture, such
as benches, etc.
MISSION SOUTH OF CHAVEZ NEIGHBORHOOD TRANSPORTATION STUDY
Corridor-wide Improvements: TRANSIT PERFORMANCE
What is your highest priority for TRANSIT IMPROVEMENTS?
Bus bulbs
Bus bulbs speed up transit travel times by
reducing the amount of time the bus spends
pulling out of and pushing back into traffic.
Bus bulbs
Stop upgrades
NextBus
More service for the 14L
Which location is most important to you
for transit improvements?
Stop upgrades: Shelters, seating, lighting
Shelters and seating make waiting for buses more
comfortable. Lighting makes waiting passengers
feel safer.
What other comments do you have about
the proposed improvements?
Real-time arrival information: e.g. NextBus
This study will recommend priority locations for
NextBus information, beginning with locations with
high transfers or intensive activity. High priority
locations might include Mission at 30th, at
Cortland, or at Randall.
More service for the 14L-Limited: expanded hours, greater frequency
Let us know whether you would like longer hours or more frequent service on the 14L.

PRIORITIZING POTENTIAL PROJECTS
Place a dot on the most important project on Mission Street in this area
Dots
Project
1
Improve lighting on the sidewalks
2
Shorten intersection crossings with more curb extensions
3
Invest in traffic signal technology that improves bus travel time and reliability
4
Install NextBus (real-time arrival information at stops to tell how many minutes until the next bus arrives)
5
Plant additional greenery to improve the street environment and buffer some land uses
6
Bus shelters at busy bus stops
7
Improvements to the Mission/Valencia intersection
8

MISSION SOUTH OF CHAVEZ NEIGHBORHOOD TRANSPORTATION STUDY
Location-based improvements: Mission & VALENCIA
Option A
What do you LIKE about the proposed design?
Curb extension
to shorten the
crossing distance
Improvements:
Reduce lanes on Southbound Valencia from 4 to 2
- 1 through/left
- 1 right-only
Shorten distance for crossing Valencia
Create mini plaza for landscaping and street furniture on the
southwest corner of intersection
Diagonal parking replaces parking loss along corridor and
calms traffic on Valencia
Raised crosswalk at Fair to slow vehicles crossing Mission
from Valencia
What do you DISLIKE about the proposed design?
Option B
How might you improve the design?
Dedicating time for left-turners
will reduce congestion for
waiting vehicles
The existing street is very wide, with long, awkward crossing distances
Sample uses of large curb extensions from Duboce Triangle
MISSION SOUTH OF CHAVEZ NEIGHBORHOOD TRANSPORTATION STUDY
Location-based improvements: Mission & CHAVEZ
Location-based improvements: Mission & RANDALL
Move the curb ramp into
the crosswalk, or angled
towards both directions
Enhance green buffer.
Investing in landscaping
treatments around the gas
station gives the sidewalk
more definition and makes
the intersection feel smaller
Add pedestrian refuges
to the north and west
crosswalks.
Widening the median will allow
space for a pedestrian refuge on
the west leg of Cesar Chavez.
The widened median can also
be landscaped.
What do you LIKE about the
proposed design?
Additional curb
extensions improve
pedestrian safety
What do you DISLIKE about the
proposed design?
Pedestrians sometimes
have difficulty crossing
