Principal’s Message
We are well into the New Year and our students, staff and faculty are working
hard to all perform at their highest level. We have begun the second semester
of school and our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be participating in state
assessments called the new Florida Standards. The FSA replaces the FCAT and
the assessments will begin in early March followed by the FSA English
Language Arts (ELA) and Math test in April. You can assist your child in being
successful and learn more about these assessments by accessing
www.FSAassessments.org.

Our 3rd through 5th grade students have been practicing their keyboarding
skills through a program called Edu Typing, which can be accessed at home.
You child will know how to access it, however as a reminder: Go to
myvolusiaschools.org through the search engine Firefox or Chrome; sign in VPortal account; your user name is a 1 with your alpha id, for example 1ABCD
and your password which is your date of birth, using the following format.
01022006. In the near future, the Florida State Assessments will involve
testing on the computers, so in preparation for these assessments, please
provide your child with practice time on his/her keyboarding skills by using
this program.
There were two major events that occurred in January:
Mrs. Sara Salzano, our Math Coach and Mrs. Patty Crouse, IRES Volunteer
Coordinator planned and organized the Title I Manatee Math Matters night,
which occurred on January 15th. This event taught families how to help build
their child’s math skills by the use of fun math activities. There were a 175
participants who rotated among three grade level centers to learn activities
and games that they can play at home to improve math proficiency. Everyone
was treated to a delicious dinner of pasta (marinara or alfredo) and Caesar
salad from The Garlic, A1A, New Smyrna Beach; garlic knots from Alberto’s,
US1, Edgewater, and for dessert cookies from Publix. After dinner,
participant’s names were drawn to win a variety of prizes. Every child was a
winner! Over 150 door prizes of math games were given to students to play at
home.
Mrs. Nancy Flynn, our media specialist, planned and coordinated our events
for Celebrate Literacy Week, which was Monday, January 26 th through Friday,
January 31st. We participated in the statewide event, Million Minute Marathon
on Monday and were proud to report that 629 students participated, which
totaled 15,050 minutes of reading! On Tuesday, the school observed
“Celebrity Reader Day,” with a visit from twenty one community members and
dignitaries. Visitors met in the media center for brunch and a reading of Dr.
Suess’ Green Eggs and Ham from Kindergartners Gavin and Lincoln Smith.
Following the brunch, visitors found their classrooms with assistance from IRES
Safety Patrols and enjoyed reading and visiting with students. The guest list
included:

We’ve been notified that Brent Robitzsch and April Michalowski have won the Volusia County Schools 2015

10 Ways to be a Great Parent
1. Be a good role model. Your child
learns from the example you set.
2. Show respect for your child’s
feelings, thoughts, and suggestions.
3. Make your child feel loved with your
words of praise, and your hugs and
kisses.
4. Keep your word. If you must break
it, apologize and make it up to your
child.
5. Encourage your child’s creativity.
Ask questions to stimulate curiosity and
imagination.
6. Build your child’s self-esteem by
showing appreciation for all genuine
efforts.
7. Stay involved. Know what’s going on
in your child’s life, both at school and
with friends.
8. Discipline your child fairly, firmly,
and with love. Focus on the behavior,
not the child.
9. Establish family traditions and make
time to do fun things together.
10. Think positively. By expecting the
best, you empower yourself and your
child to solve problems and achieve
goals.
Remember-Being a great parent takes
time, effort, and the ability to lighten
up!
