Currently we have requests for 84/90 places and 5/5 offered a place in the Language Unit. 36 families have named us as a second choice. This represents a significant increase in families wanting to send their children to Guillemont. On Monday the School Choir performed at the O2 Arena London. It was a fabulous night with Guillemont’s choir being part of 7,139 other children forming the massed choir. I was very proud of the children from Guillemont, impeccable behaviour and superb singing and dancing. I would also like to thank, on your behalf, Mrs Fielden, for all the work she did to prepare the children for the performance. During today’s Achievement Assembly we will be having a visitor. Nathan Widdas was a former pupil at Guillemont. He is now a Yr8 student at Fernhill Secondary. Nathan was always good at spelling and applied to appear on Sky TV’s ‘The Big Spell’. His application was successful and he has appeared in the first two episodes screened so far… Sunday evening 6pm Sky 1. The next Class Assembly is Wednesday 25th January 2017 - 2.45pm to 3.15pm in the hall. Class CB (Yr4). Today (Friday 20th January 2017) was the deadline for the next Yr6 Residential payment of £100. Thank you to all those that met the deadline. A group of Yr5 and Yr6 children took part in our first Futsal Football game on Thursday (19th January 2017) at Samuel Cody. Mr Barry has written a match report for you to read. It’s at the bottom of the newsletter. The Guillemont Football Team (Uppers) are playing a football match against St Peters School today (Friday 20th January 2017). Next Friday (27th January 2017) we are fortunate to have a visit from Damian Kelleher. Damian is a published author of children’s books. I’m grateful to FOG for funding this visit. I’m sure all of the children will enjoy listening to what he has to say. The week commencing 30th January 2017 will be our e-safety week. Miss Thomas (Subject Leader for computing) will be writing to you soon to outline the activities we have planned. Linked to our e-safety week and following the ‘Safer Internet Day 2017’, we will be inviting parents and carers to a presentation evening/evenings during the second half of this term. More to follow. Incidentally, the ‘Safer Internet Day 2017’ is Tuesday 7th February 2017. Futsal is similar to football; however, it is played indoors. The pitch and goals are smaller and the ball is heavier. The game focuses on teamwork and skill with the aim of the game being trying to score more goals than the other team. The Guillemont Team would face tough opposition against 4 other schools from the local area. Guillemont started their first round of games well with a strong defensive effort from Aidan Stoneman and Ronnie Gibbons. On a smaller pitch their marking and coverage was fantastic, limiting the opposition at first to long range strikes. Midfield maestros, Jamie Maple and Ethan Holmans, were breaking play up and were passing the ball forward skilfully. Two of Guillemont’s best chances to score came in the form of a glancing header from Sam Abraham which forced an excellent save from the opposition’s keeper and then Aiden O’Brien who’s quick feet in attack lead to a fantastic curling shot, which crept just wide. Guillemont kept their defence strong behind excellent tackling from Ben Harris followed by some defence splitting passes. Guillemont received a special mention at the end, following what can only be described as a goal keeping clinic by lone goal keeper Harri Cockburn. As the last line of defence on many occasions, Harri rescued the team and kept them in the game. A highlight save came in our last game where he tipped the ball onto the cross bar after a full stretch dive. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Growth on the Journey to Success Guillemont Junior School Sandy Lane Farnborough Hampshire GU14 9ES t: 01252 666846/7 f: 01252 666848 e: [email protected] w: www.guillemont.org.uk Headteacher: Mr Denis Foster MSc PGCE _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The team finished 4th overall and represented the school with grace and pride and were commended by Mr Barry and Mrs Beauchamp. Multiple members of the team expressed how much they enjoyed the event and trying a new sport. They look forward to future tournaments. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Growth on the Journey to Success
