STREET PAINTING – Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 10 AM – 2 PM
SMARTSfest is a community celebration supporting art education for children in & around the Ohio One Building on the
corner of East Boardman & Commerce Streets in downtown Youngstown. This community celebration will include music,
dance, visual arts and SMARTS hands on activities for children of all ages. PLUS an amazing display of street painting
created by artists of all ages!
SMARTSfest is a community arts celebration with the Mahoning Valley’s first street painting component ever.
Be a part of the spectacular art in public space piece created by area artists to celebrate SMARTS, Students Motivated by
the Arts. SMARTSfest is inspired by street painting festivals that take place in Lake Worth & Sarasota, FL and Santa
Barbara, CA.
SMARTSfest ELEMENTS:
1) FEATURED ARTIST is a professional street painter, muralist that creates a showpiece by reproducing a
recognizable masterpiece work of art, or original image in large-scale format directly on an approximate 20’x20’
space the asphalt surface of the street. Important for this piece to set the tone as “streetpainting art” vs
“sidewalk chalk”. This artist will begin work on Friday, May 20. Artwork is sponsored by presenting sponsor.
2) LOCAL ARTISTS will create a piece of original art “celebrating SMARTS, Students Motivated by the Arts.” These
artists each get an approximate 6’ x 6’ or 6’ x 12’ space marked off on Champion Street. The selected artists will
need to submit sketches of their planned work for approval to our friends at the SOAP Gallery and be accepted
into the event. Artists can paint their space with tempera paint to create a background color allowing their
artwork to “pop” as well as make it easier for the check to hold. The artists will work for FREE, receive their chalk
from SMARTSfest, are expected to share with other artists and need to return it to check in station when finished.

3) SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: $150 EACH
Each art space can be sponsored. The artist/s will receive the sponsor name when checking in at the Artist Zone.
Artist/s will be encouraged to make it a part of their work and can enhance it by drawing a "frame around” or
including it in the contents of your painting. It should be visible and readable. See the SMARTSfest chalk plan to

4) CHILDREN’S AREA: $5 per cup of SMARTfest Supplies
GOAL: Children 13 and under can create their own street painting as part of larger mosaic
Children sign in with adult at the Artist Zone and receive 1 cup of chalk. Blender tools will be available. They will
be assigned to an approximate 2’x2’ space to create. They can have fun and create until they are finished before 2
pm, then return leftover chalk and cup to sign in table for reuse. See the SMARTSfest chalk plan to see the

5) SMARTS logo in street painting
