Wiltshire Sight is an independent charity supporting people living with sight loss in Wiltshire and Swindon. We assist more than 2,500 people of all ages, as well as their families and carers. We offer information, advice and guidance, as well as giving people practical and emotional support to help them in their daily lives. We have a fully equipped resource centre at St Lucy’s in Devizes, offering state-of-the-art assistive technology products and low vision aids. We run community Drop-ins across Wiltshire and Swindon, provide Zoom Club supporting children and families living with sight loss as well as sending out a range of talking books through the Wiltshire Sight Audio Library. We also offer training for carers and professionals in the form of our innovative Looking out for Sight project. The technology we have available includes: l Dolphin computer software l Synapptic tablet/phone software l DaVinici CCTV magnifiers l Apple laptop and tablet with text-to-speech functions l Pebble HD handheld magnifier l iZoom USB stick magnification l ReadEasy l PC-Eye All of these products can be tried out at St Lucy’s Sight Centre and information on how to purchase/rent them can be provided. 5 Sight Services wiltshire sight Drop-ins Supporting people living with sight loss Drop-ins Our Sight Advisers will be on hand to offer you information, advice and support on your eye condition as well as provide demonstrations on assistive technology and resources that enables you to do everyday tasks more easily. The Drop-ins service also presents an opportunity to talk to those in a similar situation to yourself. It’s an opportunity for families to meet in a safe and friendly environment, where you can gather support and advice from other parents, children and Wiltshire Sight. Wiltshire Sight’s Zoom Club go on incredible days out and do all sorts of activities for the whole family to enjoy. A day out to Cholderton Charlie’s Farm. A Hiss and Tell event with reptile/insect handling. Skills for Parents As a parent, once your child is diagnosed with a visual impairment you may have questions and concerns. Wiltshire Sight have created a course for parents of visually impaired children, to provide them with knowledge and support in the home and at school. The course is run by a Community Sight Advisor, each session lasts 2 hours. We will cover a wide range of information such as: Diagnosis l Pathways after diagnosis l Early Intervention l Transition into school l Colour contrast/lighting l 7 Sight Services wiltshire sight Skills for Seeing – in partnership/Tips for Sighted Guiding a Visually Impaired Person/Technology Events Supporting people living with sight loss Skills for Seeing – in partnership with: We teach two techniques to assist people with central vision loss to use their remaining vision more effectively: Eccentric viewing and Steady eye strategy. Eccentric viewing technique involves identifying and using the healthiest parts of your macula. You may already be using eccentric viewing, for example you may turn your head to see someone’s face. Steady eye strategy is a technique that helps your ability to read. This technique involves keeping your eyes still and moving the text through the best part of your vision. We can also offer the introduction of lighting to assist you with a variety of tasks. Tips for Sighted Guiding a Visually Impaired Person Wiltshire Sight offer training to support with guiding someone with sight loss through everyday tasks such as crossing the road, navigating steps and communication in busy environments. Technology Events We attend and host a number of assistive technology events providing information on products that can support you with using computers/smartphones, listening to audio books or even reading a book. 8 Sight Services wiltshire sight Looking Out for Sight/ Drug and Alcohol Awareness Talk Supporting people living with sight loss Looking Out for Sight Looking Out for Sight is a 60 minute workshop developed by the sight loss charity Thomas Pocklington Trust. Participants are asked to carry out everyday tasks whilst wearing sim-specs. This experience helps understanding of what life can be like for residents in their care who have sight loss and how to support them. Information about the main eye conditions will be shared and there will be opportunities for discussion. The training aims to ensure that staff fully understand the effects of living with visual impairment and to support their residents more effectively and within good practice guidelines. Drug and Alcohol Awareness Talks Our talks are delivered by a community sight advisor who travels around Wiltshire and Swindon providing preventative talks to those recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. We provide information and demonstrations through simulation specs and pictures of how different eye conditions affect your sight. We provide talks to those in hard to reach areas to prevent further deterioration to their sight. 9 wiltshire sight Supporting people living with sight loss Sight Services wiltshire sight Fundraising Supporting people living with sight loss Fundraising Wiltshire Sight Lotto Wiltshire Sight Lotto costs £24 a year; just £2 a month! The monthly prize is based of 25% of the income, and numbers are drawn on the last Friday of the month. Donate stamps/toner cartridges/foreign currency We are currently collecting used stamps, empty printer cartridges and foreign currency, all of which we can send off to raise money that funds our services. Collection Boxes Our pink robots are perfect for the work place and our rainbow collection boxes are ideal to collect and support us in your home! Legacies Wiltshire Sight almost entirely relies on the generosity of the general public to fund our services. Leaving us a gift in your Will, however large or small, will help to provide a full range of support services to people who are registered partially sighted.
