There was a lot of noise this morning in Little Bug
Street. Even the birds had been woken up early.
Paper and cans were being thrown out of the dustbin,
all over the pavement and on to the road. It was making
a lot of mess!
Suddenly the door of number seven opened and Hum
Bug slowly came out. “Oh no,” he said, as he watched
an empty soup can roll past him.
“I thought today was going to be a bad day” he cried,
but then every day seemed like a bad day to Hum Bug!
Thinking the worst, as he often did, Hum Bug imagined
there was a monster in the bin with big teeth and eyes
that popped out from its head.
He was very scared and so he sat on his garden wall to
watch the bin from a safe distance!
Suddenly a smelly old shoe flew out from the bin. Fitness
Bug was jogging past when it hit him on the back of his
head!
“Who threw that?” he shouted,
rubbing his sore head.
“It wasn’t me!” called Hum Bug, “I think it was
a horrible monster in there that did it,” and
he pointed at the dustbin, which was now,
quiet and still.
I think a few star
jumps will sort you
out, Hum Bug!” said
Fitness Bug, jogging on the spot.
“No thanks,” groaned Hum
Bug, as he climbed down from the
wall.
He quickly made his way back to
the safety of his house before the
scary ‘bin monster’ got him
or worse still… Fitness Bug
made him exercise!
As soon as Hum Bug’s door shut, a flurry of potato skins
erupted from the bin.
A gust of wind sent them
across Little Bug Street
and stuck them to the
window of Number four.
The curtain twitched
and a big red nose
pressed against the
window. It was the home
of Flu Bug and his redrimmed eyes peered at
the peelings sliding down
the window, but before he
turned away and let out an
almighty sneeze…
“AAAAAA-TCHOO!”
Green slime sprayed all over
the inside of his window.
Using his curtain he wiped the
window clear and then looked
outside again.
From inside the bin, litter was being thrown in all
directions and a rather angry sounding fly buzzing,
“Zzzzz!, Zzzzz!” around it.
Flu Bug went out to investigate leaving a trail of dirty
tissues behind him.
When he reached the bin, he let out another almighty
sneeze…”AAAAATCHOO!”
It sent the poor fly somersaulting one way and blew some
old newspapers in the other!
“Be careful, Flu Bug” shouted Hum Bug, from safely inside
his window, “I think there’s a monster in there!”
“What monster?” asked Flu Bug, wiping his dripping nose
with the back of his hand.
“A very dangerous and messy one, who is trying to kill us
with flying shoes and old cans,” shouted Hum Bug.
Flu Bug sniffed loudly and stared at the bin and he had an
idea!
“Tummy Bug at number fifteen will know what’s in that
bin!” he muttered to himself.
So with another loud sneeze, he walked off to Tummy
Bug’s house, still with a dirty tissue stuck to one foot.
Further along the street Doodle Bug was busy drawing on
his garden fence as Flu Bug passed by. His tall purple hat
nearly fell off his head as he backed away to avoid being
near to Flu Bug and his germs. Sneezing would be bad for
his doodling!
Doodle Bug put his tall purple hat straight and he
checked his paintbrush was still safe in its pocket.
He looked down the road to see what else he could paint
and saw the bin.
‘Perfect!’ he thought and picked up a new spray can of
bright pink.
Doodle Bug stepped over litter as he looked closely at the
bin and he decided a pink doodle would brighten it up
nicely.
Just as he was about to spray, the bin began to rock
and the fly flew out making it hard to aim his spray can
properly.
“Zzzz! Zzzz! Zzzz!” buzzed the fly angrily.
“This is going to be tricky,” thought Doodle Bug.
Suddenly, a banana skin flew out of the bin and hit him
right in the eye. In a panic he accidentally let out a spray
of paint.
When the banana skin fell off his face, Doodle Bug saw
that he had sprayed the bin with a large pink blob and
there stuck right in the middle was the poor fly, bright
pink and now very angry!
“Whoops!” said Doodle bug and gently peeled off the fly.
Zzzz! Zzzz! Zzzzzz! the Fly buzzed angrily as he shook pink
paint off himself before crawling back inside the bin.
“OH NO,” cried Doodle Bug as he saw Tummy bug and Flu
Bug coming his way and quickly gathered up his things.
If there was one other bug he wanted to avoid more than
Flu bug it is Tummy Bug and his horrible smells and
germs.
“Tummy Bug’s swirling green and yellow tummy seems
even bigger today,” thought Doodle Bug as he hurried
home.
Tummy Bug walked over to the rocking bin and banged
on the side.
It stopped moving and suddenly a blue head popped
up, followed by the half pink fly. Tummy Bug‘s tummy
started to swirl and make a loud gurgling sound in
shock.
“Let me introduce myself” it said, “I’m Litter Bug and this
is my friend, Fly!”
The news of their new messy neighbours soon spread in
Little Bug Street
Doodle Bug soon visited again and offered to finish his
doodle but Fly was still very angry after being sprayed
pink the first time they met.
Humbug carried on moaning from a safe distance even
though there was no monster in the bin and Flu Bug and
Tummy Bug were too busy spreading their germs to visit
again.
Some time later Litter Bug and Fly moved from the dustbin
to the local rubbish dump and found there was even more
litter and they couldn’t be happier.
Everyone else was happy too as the rubbish bin was back
to being just a rubbish bin.
Please visit again, as there are plenty more of
Life’s Little Bugs to meet!
