SOUTHERN AMATEUR RECAP
Old Waverly was host to the Southern Amateur July
14-18. The best amateurs in the world made their way
to Waverly to take part in one of the most prestigious
amateur events in golf. Some of these amateurs
included Taylor Funk, son of Fred Funk, Robert Mize,
son of Larry Mize former Masters Champion, Bryson
DeChambeau, Ben Wood MSU golfer, Davis Riley, and
Old Waverly members Clay Homan, David Allen, and
Tyler Hitchner. Th is Championship consisted of 4 days
of tournament golf with a cut being made after Round
2. Great scores were posted throughout the week
with 65 being low Round of the event. Taylor Funk
emerged victorious after 4 days by 1 stroke shooting
a fi nal round 69. Scores can be found on sgagolf.com.
Congratulations to Tyler Hitchner for his 11th place
fi nish with a 6 under par total.

Junior golf is on the rise at Old Waverly. We are proud of our Old Waverly Juniors as
they grow through the game of golf. We had two summer clinics that focused on, not only
fundamentals of the game of golf, but also other movement and athletic motions that would
help these youngsters in any sport. Thank you to all who participated this summer and look
forward to a great fall finish!

HOW TO MAKE MORE PUTTS
The fi rst goal when hitting a putt
is simple…make the putt! The second
goal is also quite simple...fi nish
as close to the hole as possible if it
doesn’t go in! The old saying,“never
up, never in” has ruined many
golfers’ perception about putting.
True, if a ball doesn’t reach the hole,
it can’t go in; however, if a ball races
past the cup five feet, you could
easily three putt. The ball must be
traveling slowly enough for gravity
to push the ball down into the cup.
That being said, the faster the ball is
traveling at the hole, effectively the
smaller the hole plays.
All great putters have excellent
touch and feel.
Two things that
are very important to develop
great touch are centeredness of
contact and rhythm.
It is critical
to consistently hit the ball from the
sweet spot of the putter. By doing
this, it will help you to accurately
predict the speed that the golf ball
will leave the putter face.
Furthermore, we need to keep
our putting strokes “balanced”. If
the backswing is 12 inches back, the
forward swing should be 12 inches
through. It sounds very simple…it
is very simple, but the vast majority
of golfers I see struggling with their
distance control…the backswing is
too short and the through swing
is too long. In the two pictures,
you will fi nd two simple yet very
effective drills to improve your
touch and distance control!
