Pope Pius XII Program Catholic Committee on Scouting Archdiocese of Los Angeles POPE PIUS XII WORKSHOP 2016—2017 Pope Pius XII Emblem— Adventures in Discovering Self The purpose of the Pope Pius XII program is to help Catholic Scouts and Venturers more fully develop a Christian way of life within a faith community. Participants explore their baptismal call to bring about an awareness of their current and future calls from God. God’s calls are in three distinct areas: inner self, secular community, and church community. These are all intertwined and impact one’s daily life. Participants will explore this intertwining to fully understand their primary vocation of giving witness to the Gospel of Christ. The program is organized in chapters based on these calls and their interrelationships. Following are the chapters & goals for each unit. Chapter 1 In the Beginning To examine the individuals I have chosen to associate with, and explain the implications of these choices. Chapter 5 Here I Am To examine various ministries, and seek to discover the ones to which God may be calling me. Participants will conduct two interviews of individuals in two ministries between sessions. Scouts Prepare for Current Issue Presentation Chapter 2 God and You To explore what it means to be called by God through the Sacraments of initiation, and how these calls continue in and affect my life. Chapter 3 Life Choices To examine and discover various “life states” to which God may be calling me. A panel discussion with religious and laity who have made individual commitments will be part of the work in this Chapter. Chapter 4 “9 to 5” To examine various professions or occupations, and seek to discover the ones to which God may be calling me. Identifying one’s talents and gifts will be part of this exercise. Participants will conduct two interviews on selected occupations between sessions. There is time for food and fun during the sessions. Chapter 6 A Melting Pot To examine the Church’s definition of vocation and how it and God’s calls intertwine in an individual’s daily life through life state, occupation and ministry. Chapter 7 Putting It All Together To aid the participants in a realization that our faith and call from God affect our daily life and how our daily life affects our faith and call from God. Each candidate presents a research presentation on a Current Issue that affects Catholic Teaching on issues like abortion, birth control, capital punishment, immigration, gun control, sexuality, euthanasia, or war. POPE PIUS XII: Open to Venturers (male and female), Explorers, or Boy Scouts who are in the 9th Grade or higher. The program deals with church-related ministries and vocations -- awareness through which baptized persons commit themselves to serve humanity in obedience to God's call within our Catholic faith community.
