December 2016 Summary of Nuclear Plant Production Data The U.S. fleet’s average estimated capacity factor in December 2016 was 96.2 percent, compared to 94.8 percent in December 2015. Eighty-five reactors operated at 99 percent or higher capacity factor during December. The average estimated capacity factor for the full year 2016 was 91.5 percent, compared to 92.2 percent for 2015. Estimated U.S. nuclear generation in December 2016 was 71.7 billion kWh, compared to 69.6 billion kWh in December 2015. Estimated U.S. nuclear generation for the full year 2016 was 804.9 billion kWh, compared to 797.2 billion kWh in 2015. Refueling outages in 2016 averaged 35 days, one day less than the 2015 average. Fifty-one reactors refueled in 2016, compared to 63 in 2015. The estimated full-year generation for Palo Verde 2, 11.7 billion kWh, was higher than any other unit’s 2016 estimated total. Capacity figures from the EIA are the Net Summer Capacities reported in the 860 Form; other capacity figures are from media or company reports. Capacity factors are estimates based on EIA capacity and generation data, and NRC generation data. Outage duration and start and end dates are only estimates based on publicly available data from the NRC. Numbers may vary from published press releases. Outage data current as of January 28, 2017. Acronyms: B&W – Babcock and Wilcox, CE – Combustion Engineering, W – Westinghouse, PWR – Pressurized Water Reactor, BWR – Boiling Water Reactor. All BWRs are General Electric. Nuclear Performance is produced monthly by the Nuclear Energy Institute’s Policy Development and Public Affairs Division. 3
