NORTH MAC ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM GUIDE Teacher: Mr. Derek A. Smith Grade Level: K-2 Course: Physical Education Course Aims: To provide students the opportunity to develop fundamental movement and social skills necessary to participate in physical activity and become lifelong movers. Course Description: In this class students will be exposed to variety of activities aimed to provide opportunities to practice and develop fundamental movement and social skills. Students will learn and practice locomotor and non-locomotor movement skills, manipulative skills, team-building and social interaction skills. Students will develop and understanding of cognitive concepts linked to fitness, wellness, skill development, and social development appropriate to each grade/developmental level. Materials: North Mac Elementary School gymnasium and outdoor facilities Various appropriate physical education equipment Assessment Students will be assessed each unit based on the student’s ability to accurately perform the desired skill, or demonstrate and understanding of the cognitive concept. Rubrics and checklists will be used to determine degree of skill mastery based on select skill cues and identifiers. Exit Skills: Upon completion of this Kindergarten thru Second Grade physical education curriculum, students should have mastered the basic locomotor skills of galloping, jumping, hopping, skipping, sliding, leaping, running and walking. Students also should have developed, and be emerging in, other non-locomotr and manipulative skills including dodging, fleeing, chasing, tagging, underhand and overhand throwing, catching, rolling, kicking and striking. Students should be able to listen and follow directions and safety procedures for activity, while respecting their surroundings and each other. Can the student execute a kick with correct form by stepping with opposition, swinging the leg bag and forward, striking the ball with the top of the shoe, during passing drills in physical education? 4. Does the student demonstrate adequate understanding of basic health related fitness concepts, specifically the impact of frequency, intensity and time, to be able to improve levels of fitness through physical activity?
