A Message
From Jorge
R. Lopez
President
My Fellow Progressive Democrats,
Revolutionaries and Resistors - it is with
great honor, and an even greater sense
of duty, that I have taken the Oath of
Service to serve as President of the
Democratic Club of Southwest Riverside
County. In my capacity as President, I
hope to grow the club's membership,
spread our Progressive values and help
get Democratic candidates elected to
local office. We will continue to RESIST
all injustice and work toward a better
future for all.
I emigrated from Mexico when I was ten
years old, grew up in the Roman
Catholic faith in San Diego, California, in
a family of seven. Soon after high
school, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps to

serve the country that had already given
me so much. Serving next to fellow
Marines of all creeds, races, sexual
preferences, age, religion and gender,
made me realize that I could not be
against anyone like them in any way.
Not when each one of us was willing to
make the ultimate sacrifice to protect
each other, and our fellow countrymen,
from all enemies.
My friends, our nightmare has come to
be. Some of us are still in shock; some
are sad and most are angry. When the
shock and sadness turns into anger, I
will ask you to stay angry. Angry and
hungry for the change we want to see.
Join us and let’s turn that anger into
action and affect change locally. I say
this, as the person who hoped to
represent the needs of our various
communities in California’s 67th
Assembly District and to help secure a
Supermajority in Sacramento. One out
of two is not bad. But we can still do
better. As Progressives, we need to be
bold and courageous but, most of all,
uncompromising of what we know to be
just and true. Together, we will
accomplish great things and enjoy doing
it. The relationships we forge will last a
lifetime. Never give up and always
progress,
Jorge R. Lopez, DSRC President
“If you would like to call
Congressman Calvert’s office to let
him know we, the majority, support
keeping the ACA, it would help. His
office staff told me Calvert has
primarily gotten calls saying the ACA
is too costly. Our majority opinion
needs to be heard.” (TERRI WELLS)

Our Beloved Nick Shestople
I am sure that everyone who met Mr.
Nick Shestople came away from the first
meeting with him impressed by a
number of things. His life was chock full
of memories of work, deeds and ideals
that represent the very best in what a
true member of the Democratic Party
can become. He was so very
knowledgeable and he quickly became
a mentor to me. Nick passed a little
before Noon on Tuesday February 7,
2017.
Nick was a hard working and very proud
member of the Democrats of Southwest
Riverside County club and many other
organizations. He was an organizer,
giver and full participant in life for as
long as he possibly could be.
Nick was the Editor of the club's monthly
Newsletter. He leaves a hole in that
position that I will strive to try to fill, but it
might take years before I come
anywhere near what Nick achieved.
Nick Shestople also was extremely
interested in young people. For years he
was the Chair of our club's High School
Scholarship Committee and he worked
tirelessly each year helping to provide to
some outstanding graduating seniors
more opportunities to further their
education.
In recent years, Nick was plagued by
some very serious health conditions but
I always admired how he would never
waver in doing all he could for the
organizations and causes that were so
important to him. During the last
Presidential campaign, Nick selflessly
donated all the paper we needed for our
printers and he gave other supplies so
we at the Headquarters could do our
jobs as best we could.
He was passionate about getting things
done correctly and he left our club with
two bylaws changes that he wanted to
get the wording perfectly so that
everyone would understand the exact
meaning and ease of understanding.
I was told that Nick was able to continue
corresponding with members and
friends and those he loved almost till the
very end.
Nick will be remembered fondly by those
who knew him and his legacy in his
devotion to the club and Democratic
causes will not be forgotten.
Thank you Nick, for being a person I
would love to work hard becoming more
like. I won't be able to fill your shoes
because as you probably knew, I have
very short feet. Nick’s Memorial Service
was held February 27, at the Riverside
National Cemetery. (Article by Mark Wells)

In mid-January a group of Inland Empire
residents met to discuss our concerns
about (then) President-elect Donald
Trump‘s divisive governing vision. Our
fears ranged from the loss of social
programs such as Social Security and
Obama Care to real fears for the future of
our democracy. What about climate
change and women’s rights and LGBT
rights? What would a Trump presidency
mean for our children and
grandchildren?
We knew that individually our voices
would have little influence, but if we
worked as a group with each of us
contributing some time and energy
whenever we could, we would have a
greater effect.
We also knew that we could count on
our two Democratic Senators to support
our efforts. But our local Congressman,
Ken Calvert, is a different matter. Ken
has voted in lock step with the Republican
caucus during his entire 24-year
Congressional career. It’s time for him to
hear our voices. We will call his offices,
post on his Facebook page, send emails,
and comment on his
tweets. Occasionally we’ll show up at his
Corona office with our signs. For the
remainder of his term, we will not be
ignored.

Parks; Opposed terminating the law
enforcement function of the Forest
Service and the BLM; Opposed changing
the process of creating a National
Monument to henceforth require

A View from Near and Afar
By Mark Wells
This may be the most activist year in our
club’s history. I’ve learned a lot and I
know you all have too. We are now in a
great position to tackle what is before
us. We have a great leadership team,
Committee Chairs, and terrific
volunteers for the committee positions.
Kudo’s to the Zumiez store in the
Temecula Promenade who placed
this display in their front window
supporting the protesters blocking
the Dakota Pipeline. We applaud
socially conscious businesses!
What is Donald Trump "really"
trying to do?
Answer:Make America Hate
Again.

In February I joined the Menifee Eleanor
Roosevelt Democratic Club and the
soon-to-be-chartered Temecula Valley
Democratic Club. What EVERYONE
wants, nay demands, is information
about actions, activities protests and
resistance information RIGHT NOW so
we all can do great work.
Fear not, many of the vehicles for action
already exist and they is summarized
below in quick fashion.
The Riverside County Democratic Party
has a website. It is:
http://www.riversidecountydemocrats.or
g/ On that site there is a Calendar of
Actions and Events which is authorized
by the Central Committee person who
oversees the calendar.
The Menifee and Temecula Democratic
Clubs have representatives in our
Murrieta/Elsinore club so now we are all
able to communicate amongst us better.
We are going to create some sort of
consolidated central calendar for the
three clubs so that we can offer the best
information the fastest way possible to
all our members.

Page 6
Here’s a “WOW”!!! Indivisible-Menifee
went from seven (7) members at its start
to 75 members, in ONE MONTH. You
will see their article in this newsletter.
Our club has members who are part of
Indivisible 42 (a separate club covering
the entire 42nd Congressional District)
and yes, there are rumors that two more
Indivisible groups in the process of
forming in Murrieta and Temecula.
One issue that is of some discomfort to
me is that we all know we must do
something NOW. I don’t want anyone to
get burned out by doing too much, too
soon. I also don’t want to lose anyone
from anywhere by not providing them
with information quickly enough, either.
I am asking everyone to look on their
own for actions, activities, protests and
resistance and share what you learn
with me at [email protected] I look at
my inbox many times each day so I can
get information to the appropriate folks
so they can do with it what they wish.
Remember, it’s only just March and we
still have three fourths of this year to go.
We all don’t want to burn hot in the
spring then flame out by the fall. We will
educate and communicate to everyone
as we build up to 2018 and you are a
valuable part by your educating us and
communicating with everyone.
I have the Indivisible Guide I can email it
you if you wish. It is one of the many
great tools that will help all of us.
Thank you.
Where oh where was Congressman
Calvert at this meeting held for wealthy
donors at the Mission Inn? To avoid us,
he ducked in a side door. And, he
dodged us at the Corona Town Center
(his office) on February 21. Move-On
reports t Calvert “hid in his office.”
Seems Calvert has “forgotten” he
represents Democrats too.

People Power – A Request from the
ACLU Executive Director
“…We are in the fight of our lives
right now, and what we have learned
since Donald Trump's inauguration is
that there is a growing army of
people out there who want to be
asked to do something big and
important in response. We've seen it
at the protests in our streets and in our
airports. Now we want to take the next
step. On March 11, we are holding a
Resistance Training in Miami, Florida.
And what we want to do is organize
THOUSANDS of grassroots events in
communities across the country to
watch the livestream as we organize
ourselves to take the fight against
Donald Trump's policies not just into the
courts, but into the streets. So, here's
the part where I ask you to do
something big. I want you to sign up
today to organize an event in your
community. Whether it's in your home,
a local theater, a library or anywhere
else, we're gonna make this easy for
you. We'll walk you through everything.
You just need a screen, speakers, and
Wi-Fi and we'll help with the rest. What
do you say?”
