From the Board
SUMMER IS HERE
On behalf of the Club Board of Directors I
would like to extend to our members and
guests the compliments of the season to you all.
We hope you enjoy a wonderful time with your
families and friends over the Christmas break
and if travelling stay safe on the roads.
To all of our wonderful bowlers who have given
their time and energy throughout the year
supporting the Club in various capacities I
thank you for your efforts and sincerely hope
you can continue on in 2017.
To our social members and guests thank you
for your patronage throughout the year and
during the renovations, the Club could not
function without you.
Stage 1of the Clubs renovations have now been
completed.
The NEW Gaming area, Sports Bar, Balcony
and bar areas look fantastic. Over the next
month some minor adjustments will be made
throughout the club as we settle into our new
surroundings. I would like to thank the
Building Committee for their time and effort
throughout Stage 1. A special mention must go
to our General Manager Mr Paul Nicholls for
his diligence and long hours he has put in
during this time. Without Paul overseeing the
renovations on a day to day basis on behalf of
the club I don't think we could have achieved
this end result of Stage 1.
Club Grandviews will be holding a Grand
Opening Weekend on the weekend of Saturday
4th February and Sunday 5th February 2017.
The weekend's festivities will start on the night
of Saturday 4th with a band playing in our
auditorium. This will be followed by the Grand
Opening on Sunday 5th with a Family Fun Day
for all of our members and guests and their
families. Keep that weekend free to come along
and enjoy the FUN at Club Grandviews for all of
the family.
To General Manager Paul Nicholls and his
wonderful staff another great year of fantastic
service to our members and guest with lots of
enthusiasm and smiles.
I would like to personally thank the bar staff on
the way they worked throughout the
renovations with dust, noise, small bar area
and constant changes from day to day. Without
your smiles and happiness we would not have
been able to get through the renovations as well
as we did.
To the green keepers Phil, Matt and Nick who
have maintained our greens to the highest
possible standard. We are the envy of other
Clubs in the Zone in regards to the way our
greens have been presented and prepared week
in week out. The gardens are blooming nicely
and make the club's surroundings bright and
colourful.
To our chef Andy and his staff, thank you for
your continued efforts throughout the year.
Your team is one of the many faces of the Club
and our reputation is often placed in your
hands.
A big THANK YOU to everyone.
Thanks must also go to Presidents Peter Marsh
and Mary Teasdale, and their committees for
their continued efforts throughout the year.
These committees have been ably supported by
our Bowls Manager Cameron Curtis.
I have not covered by any means all of the
events that have taken place this year and
perhaps I have overlooked to thank people who
I should have, so, thank you everyone.

behalf of the Men's Bowling Club I would

participated.
We recently held our Presentation Night,
again in conjunction with the Women's
Bowling Club and the night went well.
Thanks to Mary Teasdale, Janice Shaw and
their team and my boys headed by
Cameron Curtis. Also, thanks to our special
guests, Claire and Wayne Turley, who
made the night all that more memorable.
I take this opportunity to thank our
sponsors and to wish everyone a Merry

Women’s Bowling Club President’s Report
On behalf of all our members, I too wish
everyone a happy Christmas. Thanks for the
support of Alex, the Board, Paul and all staff
throughout the year. A special mention to the
Men's Club for accommodating our requests
for green space on Mondays and for joining
with us to make our Charity and Open days so
succesful. Thanks also to Ken, Jennine and the
bar staff and Andy and his team for looking
after us especially on Tuesdays and gala days.
And finally accolades to Phil, Matthew and
Nick who make Grandviews greens so 'grand'.
End of year celebrations have commenced.
Presentation Night was very well attended and
provided a great opportunity for many to be
recognised for their achievements on the
green in 2016. Congratulations to all
recipients. Thanks to Cam Curtis for inviting
the Turleys as special guests.
Tuesday 13 December is our last bowling day
for 2016. We return on day Tuesday 10
January. Our club fours championships will
begin the following week.
For those who will miss bowling pencil in
Saturday December 17. Bowls will commence
at 11.30 with a barbeque at the finish of play.
The early starting time will allow those who
will be attending the evening show to recharge
their batteries.
Wishing you all a merry Christmas and a
happy and healthy 2017.

Women's Bowling Club Publicity Report
This is now the busy time of the year and our
festivities are well and truly in progress. We
have had some very good weather so a lot of
bowls have been played. Many of our ladies
have had a lot of success playing at other
tournaments and we have had a lot of
compliments about our new uniforms.
In our remaining club championships the
minor singles were played between Kate
Charkouch and Carol Lander. They played a
very competitive game with Kate being the
eventual winner. The winners of the
President's Cup were Annette Ryan and Ruko
Rao.
The consistency singles final was played
between Kerrie Boughen and Helen
Broderick. It was good to see so many bowls
close to the jack with Kerrie the eventual
winner. The inaugural Betty Daly (our past
patron) Trophy competition was held on the
15th November. This was played over one day
with the winners being Ruko Rao and Carole
Lander. It was great to see so many of our
ladies participate in these games.
Once again this year we celebrated
Presentation Night with our men's club. If you
were not able to attend it was a very good
function. Many thanks to the organisers and it
was great to see how our men and women work
so well together.
Diane Hampel organised a lunch for us at

Our Christmas Party will be held on 13th
December at our Club. This is a great day and
should not be missed. This is our break up
day.
Many of our members and spouses have not
had the greatest year health wise. We wish
them all the best. Please contact our Welfare
Officer Jo Hurley if anyone of us can be of
assistance.
Many of our ladies celebrated “Big” Birthdays
this year. Won't name them as they really do
not look their ages.
Many thanks to all who helped during the year.
This includes our wonderful sponsors. A great
thank you to Phil and our greenkeepers for
such wonderful greens. In conclusion I would
like to wish all bowlers and their families a very
happy xmas and a safe new year.
Stay well,

PRESENTATION NIGHT
Big congratulations to our Silver and Blue Club
Challenge sides for making it to the State Finals
last weekend, Saturday & Sunday, 10th and 11th
December.
In wrapping up, I would like to thank all the
members for their continued support of not
only myself but the sport of bowls at
Grandviews.
The boys have done well throughout the home
and away series and then had some good results
in the Regional Finals at Mt Lewis and
Cabramatta respectively.
The combined presentation night along with
our special guests, Claire & Wayne Turley,
made it a memorable night and all the feedback
has been extremely positive.
We wish them well for next weekend!
Wishing you and all your families a very
Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and
healthy New Year!

The Moon Report
John Moon - Social Director
Now that the club has been so nicely
renovated we will be able to put on some
quality shows which have proven so
popular in the past. Shows that pay for
themselves by the sale of tickets, and with
the extra space we now have we will be able
to fit in more patrons with comfort.I know
we all felt the renovations would never
finish but the end result is well worth the
wait.
Shows like the club Christmas night on Sat
17th December starring Roland Storm and
Lucky Starr. Still a few tickets left at $10ph
for members and $12ph for non-members.
Show starts at 7.30 until late. From 6.30
until 7.15 the Big Choir will sing Christmas
carols so be early to get the festive spirit.
NYE is a free night featuring Rebound
the band, no need to book but be early to
get a good table.
The Christmas ham raffles on Friday
and Sunday evening are going well. We
increase the number of hams each week
until Christmas.

Focus on key factors of the situation
Forget consequences of success/failure
Don't be distracted - if you are distracted,
refocus straight away
Forget the chatter with opponents and
spectators
Concentrate on the things that you can control
Play slower, be decisive, play with skill and your
brain
Confidence is a must
Avoid worry, anxiety - remove tension from
body
Switch on — switch off.....smell the flowers
Breathe to relax and survive!
Good technique — minimize body movements;
smooth delivery
Have a practiced shot routine — and stick to it
every time
Relax and use your senses - touch, sight &
balance (reflex)
Remember must do's — 2 or 3 each delivery
Display an winning image all the time even
when things look grim —
remember this is what the opposition sees
Every good bowl is worth cheering about
Team work means discipline and sharing the
load - No dissent
Trust yourself and your team
Simplify task — in your mind (see this, not that)
visualize
Positive thoughts — look for opportunity
Stop negative thoughts — if they start — more
positive affirmations
Expect opponent to succeed at their shot —
prepare mentally
Pressure games are not usually won by
spectacular shots
Pressure will cause mistakes by the opposition
Sustained pressure and performance is better
than flashes of brilliance.
Sustained pressure will cause opponents to
become desperate and
disillusioned.
Great play under pressure comes automatically
and when you are "In the
Zone". Don't think about mechanics
Game may not be won until the last 5 ends — be
ready for extra effort
Be patient, be well prepared, be tough, be
determined, be confident in yourself and your
team.

Adjust your attitude, get rid of the
negativity, it's the same for both sides,
think POSITIVE! Adjust and adapt!
Adjust your playing mindset, draw
aggressively to and through the jack. NO
lagging draw shots like you would play on a
fast green at Grandviews.
Leads and Seconds – apply the MUST rule!
“I must get one bowl just past the jack”
As you start your delivery, DO NOT step
forward too early, this kills your timing
Start your delivery with your arm first then
step as your arm passes your hip area
This will ensure more BODY-WEIGHT into
your delivery
This way you will deliver and get the weight
with more of your body and not just trying
to hurl it with your arm only
This is how the BEST players get their
weight on all greens. They use their body
not just their arm.
The slower the green, the quicker your step
forward can be to increase that forward
momentum
The quicker your tempo and forward-step,
the longer your length of step will be.
Ideally, this should happen naturally and
you shouldn't have to think about the
length of your step e.g. like walking down
the street, let it happen naturally
If you're still falling short, maybe your eyes
are dropping or are focussed too close to
the mat as you deliver.
Try focussing on the widest point of your
bowls arc or somewhere closer to jack-high
Don't get sucked into playing fast-green
shots or calling fast-green heads
Play under and through bowls rather trying
to take the high road around short bowls
and dead drawing which will lead to more
short bowls
On very slow greens, whether you are
holding shot or not, you should have your
players trying to trail the jack a foot to 18”
with every bowl
This will help limit short bowls massively
Remember…it all starts with a positive
mindset!
PENNANT PRESSURE PRACTICE
SPONSORED BY RALPH JOHNS PTY LTD
On behalf of
“EVERYBODY'S BODY NEEDS FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES”
“FRESH IS BEST”
Take up the challenge!
Improve your ability to draw shots in pennants when under pressure.
This practice was used by Ian Schuback to maintain his ability to achieve great things in lawn bowls,
such as playing for and winning numerous major World titles & Commonwealth Games gold medals.
The practice is designed to simulate pennant play.
4 jacks are used: they are placed 2 near each minimum length from the 'tee' and 2 on each tee.
2 bowls are played on the forehand to the short length, then 2 bowls are played on the forehand to
the long length, then coming back the same on the backhand.
The radius will be 80cm for your bowl to score, the jacks shall be on the centre line. A measuring
stick will be supplied to gauge whether you have drawn sufficiently close enough for your bowl to
count.
Each bowler will be given a card to score every bowl that is no less than 80cms from the jack.
The best way is to get a mate and have 2 bowlers on each rink score their opponents card and sign off
on it. Honesty system if you are alone.
Prizemoney is available, you will find that your ability to draw close under pressure will improve even if
your scores at this practice are not great.
Each practice is 14 ends and/or 20 ends. The aim for 14 ends is to get, for number 5 pennants
and below, 23/56 effective bowls (any bowl no more than 80cm from the jack is an effective bowl)
and for 20 ends 32/80 effective bowls.
For number 3-4 pennants 14 ends = 26 effective bowls. For 20 ends 36 effective bowls.
For number 1-2 pennants 14=28 effective bowls, 20=40 effective bowls
Any player who achieves the minimum number of effective bowls at 14 end practice receives one $5
voucher. Anybody who achieves the minimum at 20 ends receives a $5 voucher. So you can win two $5
vouchers at one 20 end practice or if you are close at 14 ends you can still win at 20 ends, or if you win
at 14 ends and miss at 20 you still get your voucher for 14 ends.
Each card, no matter the score, should be placed in the box provided.
There are more incentives to come. Every week the best score in each section is awarded an additional
$10 voucher. In the event of a tie it is a $5 voucher each. Must have submitted no less than 3 cards for
that week. Every month there is a major prize for each section, no less than 8 cards per month your best
8 will count. Total score decides, ties, prizemoney is divided.
Major prize is $50 voucher
SECTIONS OR GRADES
Each section, 5-7, 3-4, 1-2 is eligible for all prizes.
A champion for each section will be decided after all cards are collated after the 31st July.
Prizemoney $100 voucher.
A 'fresh is best' club champion will be decided and carries a $200 prize and a trophy
donated by Ralph Johns
NB: If any grade finds the target too easy the minimum can rise.

Abraham Lincoln did not write the
Gettysburg Address on the back of an
envelope while riding the train to
Gettysburg.
Lincoln started writing the Gettysburg Address on
Sunday, November 8, 1863, nearly two weeks
before delivering the address on November 19. He
wrote five drafts. He drafted the final version of
the Gettysburg Address on executive letterhead
and was probably finished the night before the
battlefield dedication ceremony.
According to Lincoln's private secretary, the
president did no writing on the bumpy train ride
to Gettysburg.
Lincoln's speech at the dedication of the
Gettysburg Cemetery lasted about two minutes.
In 1885, twenty-two years after
the address, Lincoln's son
Robert (a student at
Harvard when his
father delivered the
speech in the fall
of 1863) claimed
in a letter that his
father wrote the
speech on the train.
Napalm was not used for the
first time in the Vietnam War.
In 1942, during world War II, Harvard University
chemist Louis Fieser created napalm (a
combination of naphthenic acid and palmitic acid).
The jellied gasoline, developed in 1944 by Standard
Oil and DuPont chemical companies, clings to
everything it touches and burns violently. On
March 9, 1945, General Curtis LeMay ordered U.S.
Air Force bombers to drop nearly 2,000 tons of
napalm bombs on Tokyo, killing at least 83,000
people, injuring more than 40,000, leaving up to
one million homeless, and burning down as much
as one-fourth of the city. America also used napalm
in the Korean War.
Sound does not travel
at the speed of sound.
There is no such thing as the speed of sound.
Sound travels at different speeds depending on the
temperature and the medium it is passing through.
The denser and more compressed the medium is,
the faster sound travels. Under standard
atmospheric conditions, sound travels at 742 miles
per hour at sea level when the temperature is 32
degrees Fahrenheit. Sound travels faster at higher
altitudes and at higher temperatures. Sound travels
about four times faster through water than through
air and about fifteen times faster through steel.
