MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER
Each school year, Diocesan schools focus on a unifying theme. This year, in recognition of the Holy
Year of Mercy, the theme is “Merciful Like the Father”. Each month the IHM School community will
Focus on one of the Parables as found in the Gospels of St. Luke.
October Parable – Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
October Prayer – Hail Holy Queen
There are certainly many admirable qualities of the Good Samaritan, but one which resonated with me
in re-reading the parable for this reflection was follow-through. In the parable, the Good Samaritan
tended to the injured person, transported him, paid for his continued care, and promised to return to
remit payment for any additional expenses. The Good Samaritan understood the idea of follow-through,
which is, seeing a decision through to its conclusion.
There are so many opportunities when I commit to a noble work but, through distraction, re-direction,
laziness, or over-scheduling, I simply do not complete it. More importantly, I wonder if the same situation occurs with my relationships. Do I neglect the follow-through – time together, active listening, empathetic understanding, honest feedback? Truly, follow-through seems to be so very important, whether
addressing a task or developing a relationship.
Thinking about follow-through in work-related activities or in various relationships may be a healthy
exercise this week.
