The Great Gatsby Reading Assignments: Chapters 3-4 Chapter 3: The Party Scene Due Date: ________ # of pages: _______ Chapter 3 Assignment: Triple-Entry Journal Compose a collection of 10 short, but thoughtful responses to the following topics in chapter 3. Your journal must cover the breadth of the chapter (i.e. first page to last page!) A. Rumors about Gatsby (Are they plausible? What does these indicate about him on a deeper level? B. The party scene (What are the guests like? How do they behave? What does this reveal about their values and morals?) C. Gatsby – the flesh and blood man- examine the scene when Nick meets him D. Nick and Jordan- address them in some way- together or separately E. Other moments use some space to address anything else that stands out to you. Cite a carefully selected DQ from your book, the topic addressed, and the page number in the first column. Write a thoughtful response in the second column. Although there are many rumors regarding Gatsby, there is a clue given to the reader about what the nature of Gatsby’s work may be. What is the clue? What might it indicate is his work? 3. In what way is Gatsby’s behavior at his party quite unlike the behavior of most of his guests? 4. How does Nick meet Gatsby? What is your impression of our title character? 5. Do we know that Nick is honest? 6. What is the irony suggested in his relationship with Jordan Baker? You may need to do some re-reading for this….think back to previous info! 7. Consider the overall shift in tone throughout this chapter. What’s the mood at the start of the party? At the end? What causes it? Do some re-reading and reflecting to consider what this might suggest. Chapter 4: 8. At the beginning of chapter 4, Nick mentions three rumors about the mysterious Gatsby that his guests have passed around at the parties. What are they? 9. Describe Gatsby’s car. 10. What is Gatsby’s explanation of his background? Do you believe him? Why/why not? 11. Why doesn’t Nick believe Gatsby’s stories at first? What convinces Nick that Gatsby is telling the truth? 12. Who is Meyer Wolfsheim? What is his profession? How does he seem to be connected to Gatsby? 13. What does Nick learn about Daisy from Jordan? What do you think of Daisy? 14. What favor does Gatsby want from Nick?
